Are there any schools for the highly gifted and talented?

Post by arvi » Mon Aug 29, 2011 12:01 pm

In US and in many countries, there are gifted magnet schools. Are there any gifted/talented programs for exceptionally gifted kids in Finland?

If a highly gifted kid who does advanced grade work than his current age comes to Finland, do the schools here help him to soar at his own pace? Or will they ask him to work with the rest of the kids at his current age?

Yes, when the kids are 14 they can choose which school they want to go to... but whether they get in depends on the grades.

But in general you should not talk about that too much in Finland as we are all equal in this fine, socialist society! If you show off you will be ostracised (did you notice my use of a difficult word? that is me showing off a little :D... I am hoping to be ostracised from Finland).
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

No.

No, and yes. Although you can of course get him to advance a level up.

They do try at least at the lower levels to give them work at their own level, as some start with no reading/math skills and some with very good skills, but... well... I would still put that as a "no" for "help him to soar". (Mine is only in second grade, so I have no idea how it works in higher grades, though, nowadays.)

I have absolutely no idea how it works for the "alternative" schools like Montessori schools. They might be able to support better an advanced student.
