Lets go to Helsinki and lets start a metal band!
Really. any musically inclined folk from NorCal want to travel around? Female bass player here. I went to LA and my asthma went out of control in the death haze that hangs over Hollywood, so that option is out. Being artists we obviously need money/jobs/etc..but at least a trip to start would inspire! And it would NOT be boring. Maybe we will be able to wash dishes...romantic isnt it?

Maybe you will be able to wash dishes, but it will be illegal instead of romantic. As a citizen of USA you may come to Finland as tourist, but tourists can't work, legally, during their stay. Unless you happen to have also citizenship from some other EU country.LizzieAnne wrote:Really. any musically inclined folk from NorCal want to travel around? Female bass player here. Sorry to piss on your cereals, but I hope some realism early on will help you to avoid knockdown after you land here.

Is the catch-22 emerging? To get a job you should be where the job is and to get the RP on the grounds of job you should apply for it before entering Finland...

By now you have seen that entry into Finland for any amount of time beyond 90 days as a "tourist" includes legal hoops to jump through, and that is how it goes for everybody. However, if you are a "working" musician and if you could somehow become "employed" as a musician with an existing metal band in Finland, then, well, you get the idea...
You become "employed" with a "working" metal band in Finland, and THEN you could apply for a Residence Permit in Finland. ;-)
Make demo recordings, then make Finnish metal band contacts, and then get going!

Tuulen thank you! That was the most encouraging message and by far the best advice. As you can see some very negative and degrading comments were made, it has been tough for women to compete with men in the rock world...but I believe in music and in myself and I do know some of the best metal musicians are out that way, that is a drawing card for me to get even better. California rocks though too and I may just do it here who knows... I hope to visit next year and see! Again, thanks for your advice and positive support

Tuulen is an American optimist who I don't believe has ever been through the process to get a Finnish RP
so he may not have an experienced perspective. Finns are downright pessimistic, nothing to do with
being against women.

Ajl is right, I think the OP takes the cautionary advice of people in this forum for something other than it is. We have nothing against a woman being in a metal band, we just would prefer that this woman does her homework properly before burning a bunch of bridges only to find that she's not going to get an RP in Finland.

Listen, some of my favorite banks have female musicians/vocalists. Like Ensiferum.LizzieAnne wrote:Tuulen thank you! That was the most encouraging message and by far the best advice. But reality is that getting a "job" as a musician is extremely hard in Finland. For you to get such deal, you would need to join well established band which has been able to ditch the dayjob and could give you a contract.
Problem is, if they need new member to their ranks... There is no shortage of volunteers! And most likely hire from existing circle of top musicians whom they know. (it is quite common to pick new member whom someone in the band already knows)
Getting into new band is easier, but these are guys who throw gigs while still having another job which actually pays the bills.
It's not negativity, it is reality.

Sad but true, a vacancy in a Finnish metal band: http://www.noisecreep.com/2011/10/03/so ... -accident/Tiwaz wrote:Listen, some of my favorite banks have female musicians/vocalists. Re: Lets go to Helsinki and lets start a metal band!
hey,
my name is Annah and I moved to Espoo about a week ago. I was brought here because I got a job as a nanny for two tax attorneys. I have my residence workers permitand hope to study language at Helsingin yliopisto in the future. Language and music are my passions.
I love metal, especially black metal. Some of my favorite bands are Slayer, Burning Witch, Dystopia,
Funeral, Funeralium, Amaranthine Trampler, Trist, Wolves in the Throne Room, Burzum etc. As unoriginal as it may sound, I have always wanted to play music. I play piano and recently
have taken up violin. I am not amazing but my piano skills aren't bad, although I have yet to write music.I can sing very much like the females of Funeral, especially from the album Tragedies. I adore singing that style and know if I had people to accompany me, could write some good music. I am learning Norwegian and Finnish, and I speak a lot of German. My reason for posting on this is to ask advice on how to meet people with similar music taste, of shall I say, people with good taste haha. Even in the USA, where I am from, people generally don't listen to the music I do, and love. I'm just trying to make some friends now that I am here. I usually am off work by 4.
Hope this all made sense man.
Much appreciated,
Annah

The muusikoiden.net forum might be a better place for finding other musicians.
Re: Lets go to Helsinki and lets start a metal band!
The actual forum can be found here. (Just to help the previous poster navigate the site.) But there’s also a separate “wanted” section for ads and contacts. (Bands seeking musicians, musicians seeking bands, gigs, whatever.)jahasjahas wrote:The muusikoiden.net forum might be a better place for finding other musicians.
