there is no population database in the US, where would such a 'registration' go? Not only that, each state is its
own island, even in the current age of linking databases, whether it be a good thing or not. I'd be inclined to
think that the person asking you is only used to countries which do keep this info.

Do get apostilled documentation (x2) of the marriage in english, should you need to do something with a US govt agency
for various legal reasons.

If you want your marriage to be recognized in the US then you will need to register it there. I would just do it in the state you resided in before coming here. Of course you don't have to do it now if you don't intend on moving there but if you do it would be a lot easier for your spouse if it was already taken care of.

We never registered it in the US.

My wife applied for immigration while we lived in Finland and received her green card in 1987 after landing at JFK. (The process is a little different now, and they no longer issue permanent green cards like she got.)

Now she has US citizenship. At no point have we "registered" the marriage anywhere in the US, though I know of people who have taken paperwork to any local county courthouse and registered their marriage in that county. I don't know for what benefit.

No company or agency or instance of government has ever doubted we are married. After the immigration interviews at the consulate in Helsinki, we've never shown our marriage bona fides for any purpose.

What has changed, and what supposedly happens if you don't register? And where is that supposed to happen?
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
