"A" permit is counted, "B" permit is not. (for permanent residence permit, rules for citizenship are different)

Students get a 'B' permit. I would think that at least some of the PhD students are here on "employed person" status, in which case the duration of the contract determines if it is "A" or "B" class permit.

You don't want visa, it is for visiting. You want residence permit, that is for residing. Head to migri.fi to get some info about residence permit grounds...

Visa is for visiting, Residence Permit for residing.

Is she interested in having you here(?)

Anyway: http://www.migri.fi/netcomm/content.asp ... anguage=EN

(And, yes sometimes I'm grouchy and wonder why we have English speaking posters here that can't find that much on their own)

If you come here as a student to study it won't count. If you come here as a resident (married to a Finn) and study then yes.

But you can find all you need on the Migri website.
I̶f I can find any way to insult someone, believe me I will.

Dear Kutittaa,

Thanks for your response. You may be right in case of Permanent residency, however I am not sure. In case of Finnish Citizenship they will count the half time of temporary resident permit (B-type) as per new rules for Finnish citizenship (http://www.migri.fi/netcomm/content.asp ... tpage=true). I think student will get type B-permit. Can you please make some comments on this.

Thanks

Citizenship and residence permits depend on two different laws. Regarding permanent residence permits:
Section 56 (380/2006)
Issuing permanent residence permits
(1) A permanent residence permit is
issued to aliens who, after being issued with
a continuous residence permit, have resided
legally in the country for a continuous period
of four years if the requirements for issuing
an alien with a continuous residence permit
are still met and there are no obstacles to
issuing a permanent resident permit under
this Act.

'continuous' = type 'A' permit

Residence permit issued to a spouse of Finnish citizen is normally with one year first which is permit A, and an extension of 4 years thereafter which is 5 years in total. Does this law mean that without any interruption , the spouse can apply for a permanent residence permit even when the the second 4 years residence permit extension is about 3 years plus the initial first 1 year residence permit issued which is a total of 4 years continous residence permit ?

Yes. He/She can apply after four years from the date the first permit was issued or when she moved into Finland. (later one of the two dates)

Hi Rip,

Sorry I am still with my question. Am I right that In case of Finnish Citizenship they will count the half time of temporary resident permit (B-type) as per new rules for Finnish citizenship (http://www.migri.fi/netcomm/content.asp ... tpage=true). I think student will get type B-permit. Can you please correct me in this case?

Thanks
