HELP! Finnish tutor needed in the UK.

Post by OliviaHolmes » Tue Oct 18, 2011 2:18 pm

Hello,

I am applying for an english language MA in Art History at Helsinki University. Although I don't require any Finnish to do the course I would like a survivable amount of the laguage before I move there. It only feels polite :D . So far I havent been able to find any courses in my area (midlands, England) or a directory of tutors. I would have no problem working with a tutor through Skype and email. I simply need a working knowledge of spoken Finnish to a level where I can get through two years in helsinki without embarresment. Although anything above this would be fantastic too.

I have already enrolled on www.finnishschool.org

I hope someone can help me!

Thank you.

I found my Finnish school through the Finn Guild website so I would definately recommend that you have a look.

There are quite a few schools around the UK, most are held on a Saturday morning. Lessons are usually around 2 hours (although there is a coffee break between so realistically the lesson time is 1 hour and 30 minutes).

If you have no knowledge of Finnish then I would recommend that you go to the beginners class but if you have some knowledge you may find that a bit slow and the intermediate level 1 would be a better class for you. I don't know about the other schools but ours is using the Suomen Mestari book (was using Finn Talk) you should be able to get this at the school.

Have a look at the nearest one to you and perhaps email the headteacher for information and pop along to the class to see what you think.

Midlands... hummm... I'd be in Huntingdon-Cambridge area if anyones desperate.

In any case always an advice to check the local unis and polytechnics, theres bound to be a Finn in them somewhere
