I have had type A RP for almost 4 years now, and I will renew it at the end of the year. I have my RP based on employment. now my employment is ending and i am considering getting a contract job with a non-finnish company.
I am not sure how to do it, i was told by yrityssuomi that i could get a toiminimi nd I can do my work
what worries me is my RP extension
AFAIk this is a change in my status and hence i am afraid that my extension doesn't get renewed or is changed to B or anything else that would prevent me from getting my permanent RP
anyone knows what is the right way to do it? toimini or oy or any other way?
permit type A extension question
Re: permit type A extension question
A change of job doesn't revoke your RP as long as it is;
- a job in the same field
- permanent (at least 2 years contract)
So if your job ends and you start a Tmi, there might be a problem since you don't have a permanent contract any more.
You have to show that your Tmi has plenty of work (contracts).

Re: permit type A extension question
If you want to register as a private trader running your own business then you need a different type of work permit (the self-employment permit). To apply for this you need to either have your company registered already in the Trade Register or to provide enough information about your business idea, profitability estimations, agreements with potential customers, qualifications you have to carry on trade in the field of the business, etc.
I am not sure on whether you can just register in the trade register without the proper self-employment permit. My guess is that you should be able, but you can't engage in business until you have the self-employment permit. This took in my case about a year, but I had not registered the company AND it was my first Finnish permit. It should be faster in your case, I presume.
There are a few pointers that can help you prepare for this:
- http://www.yrityssuomi.fi/web/enterprise-finland : plenty of information on how to run business in Finland. I recommend you reading through what they have. They also give some courses from time to time about this.
- https://liiketoimintasuunnitelma.com/ This is a webservice that helps you to write the business idea documentation, and also has useful web forms that you can use for your profitability calculations and sales estimations. With this preparing a sound business proposal is much easier, if you have no previous experience doing this type of documents.
