EU citizen registration

Post by Valerie86 » Fri Feb 24, 2012 9:33 am

Hello,

I am a EU citizen, I am currently in Finland where I''m spending a total of 5 months as a visiting student at the University of Helsinki. I am still unsure whether I need to register at the police station. I was going to do it but then some other students said that I don't really need to unless I'm planning on moving on a more permanent basis, and that in any case, going abroad for a day or so (like, a day-trip to Tallin) would basically reset my 3-months tourist right to stay in Finland.

However, I keep reading everywhere that I NEED to register. Any advice?

Thank you!

You are meant to register within 3 months, according to the law, but in your case it hardly seems worth it. I didn't register until I'd been here 5 months, and the police couldn't care less when I finally got round to it.

Well, I've been getting mixed opinions on the issue so I wanted more specific info. As I said, I took it for granted that I needed to register until I was told it could be avoided. Now that you have confirmed that it has to be done, I'll complete my registration as planned, and I'll make sure to pass the info along to whoever else might think it's not strictly necessary.
