Came across this sentence recently:

From other examples, I think I can safely say that mennä kuin Strömsössä means "to go smoothly".

If I look up Strömsö on wikipedia, it mentions a TV show about household projects. I presume that it therefore means that it didnt´t go as well as on that TV show?

Yep, you got the meaning... just exchange the Strömsö with "Martha Stewart" or whatever similar show. Although I would guess most who use that have not actually seen the show, I find it more "real" than the average show of that type.

I'm not sure whether they came up with the phrase, but there's a somewhat popular Facebook group called Ei menny niinku Strömsössä that showcases photos of people's failed attempts in cooking, building and crafts. Not only do the people in Strömsö seem to make everything effortlessly, the show has an idyllic, smiley Finland-Swedish vibe, which offers a nice contrast for these failures.

It seems that nowadays the phrase can be used in any situation where things didn't go smoothly. There's also a similar phrase, "ei mennyt kuin elokuvissa".

To conclude the language lesson, "Strömsössä" is pronounced more like "strömssöössä", since Strömsö is a Swedish name.
