If she was born out of Finnish parents, then she was born a Finnish citizen, no matter what exactly happened later.
The courts do have the final say, but parliamentarians SHOULD know the meaning of a law that they themselves wrote, especially of such a recent law.
Better to act according to what is, rather than what one thinks should be, especially if one knows it isn't what it should be anyway.

Aha, I was not aware of that, and thank you. Nor was she aware of that, but her talk with a Finnish embassy should now provide her with delightful news!

Politicians typically argue over the smallest of legal details, so that by the time final legislation is adopted there SHOULD be a good understanding of what a law says.

But it also is true that a law is sometimes written so broadly or vaguely that eventually a court must decide just what the law says and means.

Sorry, but in what kind of fantasy bubble do you live? Your world sounds like a happy and naive place.

Then again, sometimes legislators DELIBERATELY write laws which are too broad and too vague, in order to TEST the legal limits of the courts.

Wow, you guys can be exhausting to read.

Sorry for being M.I.A. for a while, just didn't want to post anything until I had something of some worth to share.

I was in contact with the Finnish Embassy here in the states, they stated I can get my citizenship by declaration. The KAN_7 form was sent to me. With that I need to send in my parents birth certificates, which I received yesterday in the mail from family in Finland. Now I just need to complete the form and apply in person at one of the Embassy's, Consulate or Honorary Consulate. So I have to plan a trip to one of those locations to apply in person.

To set the record straight here are the facts of my situation - I was born in America to then and still current Finnish Citizens. My sister was born in Finland and is still a Finnish citizen, none of them have dual citizenship with any other country, they are straight up Finns. I never lived or worked in Finland. Finnish was my first language growing up but obviously living in the states I speak English - who would have thunk it?!

Yes I have family in Finland, my grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins. I was simply posting on here to learn as much as I could prior to reaching out to my connections there, thinking they don't have experience with getting Finnish citizenship because they have it - so it would make logical sense to reach out to individuals that may have experience with getting Finnish citizenship or helped others get it along the way.

I am still trying to confirm whether I was ever considered a former Finnish citizen or not, which I believe would be the KAN_9 form. I am pending a response from the embassy for further direction.

Thank you to all who have been helpful and especially to the Finns on here confirming I am SISU just by reading what you type, humorous I must say.

love n light,
susan k

Because of your parents, I think there is no question about it (it does not matter even if you were never registered with Finnish authorities at that time), while because of your age, I it seems also clear you can't be a current citizen. Therefore the KAN 9 seems to me waste of time and money (more time than money).
