non residence bank account

Post by AnnikaL » Tue May 15, 2012 1:37 pm

Ok, I'm not moving to Finland but didn't know where to put this.

Does anyone know if it is possible for me to open a Finnish bank account even though I live in England for all but 1 month of the year? It would make life easier for when I visit, and possibly also for making payments for cottage duty/insurance etc. I have a Finnish passport, but not sure that will count for anything.

I used to have a 'British' euro account but they decided to start charging £5 a month just for the privilege

It can't be too difficult. A foreigner with an ID code should get one, you are citizen, obviously have that code, you have Finnish issued ID papers (passport). and if you want you can always register at "maistraatti" here, if you want (but I don't see that as requirement for the bank).

As you don't want to pay much... S-Pankki perhaps? After paying the (refundable) co-op membership fee (35€ in Helsinki area) account, online codes and debit card would be free. Online banking only in Finnish.

Thanks, well I guess I can start visiting banks when I'm next over and ask. But nice to know in advance my likely chance of success. The banks will be in Kuusamo, there are are a few along the high street that I can think of.

Would anyone recommend Osuuspankki? I have my insurance through them already.

If you can deal with online banking in Finnish. The light version is available in English too, though. If you already have your insurances from there, I'd go with OP. Or if going for some other bank, I would take the insurances there too if possible.

I have OP (I use it in Swedish), it's fine. I have my insurance there also, so the "credit" you get from being a loyal customer pretty much covers any banking fees you may have.
