Moving to Turku - what if...

Post by menene » Sun Jun 03, 2012 5:55 pm

I have been admitted at Turun AMK. As many other places in Finland, there's a society which makes renting a flat for students easier (and probably cheaper). Like at Helsinki the students has HOAS, TYS is the equivalent at Turku.

Date for first applications to get a flat for September opened two days ago (1st June), so a few hours after opening, I just sent my application to five flats (not the most popular ones). I'm a new student and didn't choose the most popular places, so I shouldn't be worried about it.

However, I saw at TYS Facebook that last year there were many problems about housing for students - like more than a half of the students couldn't get a flat (actually I don't believe that great amount, but whatever).

So I was wondering what would happen if a new student like me don't get a flat there. Which steps should I follow? Start searching on my own? Contact other students to see if they share their flat?

Some of my questions could sound obvious, but I would like to have everything somehow fixed before going there.

Cheers!

Really? Where did you read it? That's really bad news.

It seems that the only would-be students in Turku are the two of us here. :)

Finns might not frequent this forum, but they too need place to live...

Visa is for visiting, Residence Permit for residing.

Hey! I just saw that at TYS FB page, where a student was worried some time ago about the situation. You can see it by yourself if you scroll through comments.

But let's think positive anyway.

I think I've made a mistake that I did not apply for August :(
There were much more appartments and I would know the answer much earlier.
Now we will get answers only 6 weeks before September, and if we get negative results we have very little time to arrange a flat...

Well, I'm taking my tent with me anyway. :D

You're right, although August and September are reserved months for new students, and I don't think that many people comes and rent a flat for a whole month while classes doesn't started yet.

Or at least thinking that way I feel more relaxed so... let's just wait my future student buddy!

I'm gonna study in Turku also, applied for a flat on May (for rent starting in August).

I'm still on the waiting list, not too worried for the moment, so I hope everything's gonna be fine.

I'll let you know when I get the answer ^^

Saw that on TYS' FB page, congratulations! People who applied early for August will find no problem on getting accomodation. I hope we, the ones who applied for September, have some luck too!

I'm going to TYS in Turku. Been accepted. If you need a few days to stay (i'll be there in August) somewhere, feel free to contact me as you try and find your own place.

They shall also have some places to stay, if something happens, that you are left with no room.
Just tell your situation early enough and it will workout!

Hey guys. Just updating the post - I've been accepted at TYS and now have a confirmed appartment for me shared with other guy, just in time. Thanks for your interest and thank you Wikus for your generosity!
