Moving to Finland with Dog

Post by carnina » Thu Jun 21, 2012 2:24 pm

Hey everybody.

In August I will move to Finland with my lovely dog.

I (24) am German and currently studying in the Netehrlands. I will do an exchange program to the Haaga Helia University from August 2012 till Dezember 2012.

It is quite a challenge to find an accommodation, when you have a pet and are a student (short term period).
I would need a furnished room, the location is not that important, as far as I can get to Haaga within 30min.

I consider also to work partly in maybe a animal shelter (or so) and therefore get a room or something.

I really love dogs and I cannot imagine living without him! He is a well trained kind of hunting dog (but does not hunt anything except dummys and stuffed toys) in the house very quite, doesnt bark or destroy anything ( anyhow he is insured for any kind of damage).

If you can help me, please let me know. I am thankful for any advice.

Gretting

Canina

As far as I know you can't get student housing with a pet. Which means you can only go for the more expensive apartments etc. and look for ones that allow animals. If you can't read any Finnish then you won't be able to navigate any of the websites.

As for working in an animal shelter for a room? I have never heard of that being possible anywhere, let alone here. Maybe where you are from but girl, this isn't Germany or The Netherlands, this is @#$% Finland...

Someone happily correct me if I am wrong.

Hm, Finland doesn't have that many shelters as people generally treat their animals well and think before getting pet, I guess it's a cultural thing. But anyway, this isn't a way to go, so think about any other possible way of housing. I'm coming to Helsinki in few days with my yorkie and it wasn't an easy task to find an apartment that allows pets - my landlord allowed me to stay with her because she is uber small and there's no way she could do any damage :-). I found the apartment via airbnb.com (warning, quite expensive) and asked if I can bring her (defaultly, it was forbidden). But I guess, you will have much better chances to find suitable apartment without worrying about frauds etc., if you'll be in Finland and ask for help, that way it should be the quickest one.
Good luck! :-) If you'll be here, we can go for a walk :P !

Being helpful, and being a realist are kind of two different things if you didn't know. But it's good that you got an apartment. Seemed like you got an apartment in just a few days. If you think that was hard, wait till you experience living here.
