Isto é interessante.... Mas não falo português.... :wink:

Well, interesting that this post is here... I've just returned from a vacation in Portugal and among other things because of my interest in linguistics I paid quite a bit of attention to the language....and a rather pleasant, attractive sounding language it is ...at least to me.... ... with all those words ending with a "sh" sound and with that nasal ...ão diphthong....

The sense I got was that it would be quite easy for an English speaker to learn to read and write Portuguese....after all English shares much the same Latin origin vocabulary, but I think getting the pronunciation right would be a lot tougher....much tougher I think than Spanish....

But I did pick up some of the "patterns"....the "l" in many words...though not all, words like "plaza"/"plate" changes to an "r"...praça/prato.....The word for "beach" is praia...compare to the Spanish, playa. The word for "thank you" is obrigado/obrigada...[males say, obrigado; females, obrigada...essentially this means, "I am obligated". Words ending in "...tion"/"...sion" change to ...cão...with the "n" sound becoming a nasalized remnant....

Lots of other interesting points...one thing I noticed...on doors, the word for "push" is empurre and the word for "pull" is puxe....pronounced {pushe}.... the "x" has a "sh" sound.... :lol:

Horrible = Horrìvel (rr pronounciation differs between European (more of a rolling rr I think) and Brazilian Portuguese (h-sound).
Terrible = Terrìvel
Probable = Provàvel

If you know the two rules above that means you already have a decent starting vocabulary in Portuguese. Unfortunately, Andrew, I'm also learning Finnish, so I can't help you with it :)
