Study permit extension - a possible refusal

Post by hiiri » Tue Jul 03, 2012 8:02 am

Hello

I've been studying here for 2 years for my Master degree. My residence permit expires 30.08. Due to some personal reasons I'm not graduating this year so I need one more year to finish my studies. At the university, I was told that everything was fine, I have a right to continue my studies and there's nothing to worry about. But then I learned that police was going to make decision about permit renewal taking my study progres into account! As far as I understand, I need to have 80 credits (for 2 years) but I only have 65. It made me panic. Do I still have a chance to get a renewal? Or I sould consider my study here a failure and just go home?

I guess if you can take some basic course like Swedish 101 which can help you to get 2 - 3 credits then it shouldn't be a problem.
and if you have a study plan for next year and it is approved by your student advisor then it may help too. I did the same thing when I failed 1 course of 5 ECTS miserably (I think it was Simulations) so I took 1 Spanish course and 1 Finnish course to cover the requirement.
Mind you, I did so in 2003 so rules might be different now.

Thank you for the reply, Oombongo, but it's too late to take any courses. I do have a study plan and I will get all the missing credits in autumn. But the permit expires in two months...

I don't dare to guess how the police will judge this.
On one hand 15 credits is a lot and it shows you've not been studying.
On the other hand if your study plan shows you'll get the credits soon, they might be reasonable.

But if they refuse, you can appeal and continue studying while the appeal is processed. When you get the study points, you can add that information and there should be no problem. Off course the other conditions for renewal (insurance, funds) should be A-ok.

Thanks! I'm more optimistic now

if you r in ur 2nd year you can tell police that you are still working on your thesis and I am positive it will be ok.
I know couple of people in your situation and they were ok when they said that they are working on their thesis
