Residence Permit extension

So, in many ways I know the answer to this already. But my residence permit has expired just today, I have a new job offer. Can I apply for a residence permit extension still? Or will I need to start the process all over again?

I have already read I must submit it before the expiry date so that really already answers the question. But I was wondering if anyone here has applied for an extension past the expiry date and got the extension?
