Recently it was announced that Finnair was making job cuts to maintenance employees so if you and a Finn applied to the same job, guess who they'll choose. Plus, you need to know Finnish for most aviation jobs.

This is not what i have found, there actually are foreigners working at Helsinki-Vantaa in aircraft maintance jobs.
One of them is an American and has been at the airport for 20 years or so (hi Jerry if you are reading this, i am the Aussie at ISS Aviation).
As far as the work goes, knowing Finnish isn't a prerequisite, all manuals and work related stuff tend to be in English anyway.
It's just conversing with workmates that tends to create problems, however they all speak English anyway.

That's why I didn't say *all*. We flew once with Air Finland and the captain was either Irish or British and made the whole announcement in English. Unless you're an expert then the preference would go to Finnish speaking applicants.

There is an other problem.
Since you're not from the EU I suppose, you need to have a residence permit first before you can start working.
To get a residence permit you need a job. (see the catch 22)
If you can find an employer who is willing to give you a job contract and than is willing to wait until your RP is processed (which can take up to 6 months) before you start, everything should be ok. But I guess you need to have some very special skills to make this plan works.

And if there are sufficient unemployed Finns with the same training Migri might even deny your RP.
