Hello! Marsha from Iowa USA here; this is my debut on your page. My husband and I will be living in Helsinki for the 2013-14 academic year, he as visiting scholar @ Univ of H (we are jazzed to be coming) and my first query is, oddly enough: Is there an Ultimate Frisbee league or players' group or following in Helsinki? He is addicted to the game; he may go into withdrawal if he can't play Ultimate for a year!

Please advise me. Secondly, I've heard that buses don't run much (if at all?) on Sundays -- we'll have no car but need get around Helsinki on Sundays. So,, are taxis expensive?
Ya-- it's a whole year before we come but these kind of details will help us feel settled about our recent acceptance of the academic gig. Premature nesting, as it were.

Btw, Finnish team seems to get beaten by the organizers:

I haven't used a regular bus in Helsinki ever. But by glance it seems that they do run much:

As for taxis:

and that "minimum charge" isn't really descriptive... it is charged when you hop in the car, the per kilometre is added on top of that.

So, are taxis expensive?
"Prohibitively" would be an understatement.

Yes on Sundays the whole city seizes to function and we simply hibernate till Monday. Seriously, I mean I know I shouldn't be surprised given the source of the question but to make such an assumption is just plain absurd. Buses run on Sundays but less frequent than weekdays so for example, instead of 4 buses in one hour, there will be only two. Bookmark this link

Our buses probably run better on a Sunday than yours do fullstop in America LOL. Even out in the sticks we have decent transport on Sundays and holidays.

Take this with a grain of salt as I have never played ultimate in Helsinki, but I think the weather probably prohibits the game from being played between about October and May.
As for busses: as far as I can tell, busses and trams run pretty frequently on Sundays. Stores do close early on Sundays, however, which is one thing I've had to get used to. If you're living in Central Helsinki, though, you'll never have a problem with transportation -- especially if you're near a metro stop.

Stores being
open on Sundays is a novelty I've been getting used to. Not in the "good old days..."
