Moving to Espoo
Moving to Espoo
Hi!
I have been offered a job in Kuunsade, Espoo, I have looked for information on this part of Esppo but alas I can't find anything, is it a better idea to look for a room in a flat in the centre of Espoo instead? Does anyone know if Kuunsade has any shops or anything? Also I have a 4 month trial period are there any agencies or flat shares that do monthly contracts and not year long contracts? Any information would be very gratefully received as I am very excited at the prospect of moving to Finland!
Thank you!

Haven't heard of Kuunsade, is that supposed to be in Espoo? Are you sure of the name?

Espoo doesn't really have a "centre" so to speak. I mean, yes, it does have the Espoon Keskus, but it is useless. Places like Tapiola feel more centre-esque. I would recommend looking for somewhere in Leppävaara. It is only 15 minutes in train from Helsinki, has loads of buses going everywhere, and has a really good forest right beside it.

Rental contracts are open-end rolling contracts, you don't want anything else. Same applies to work. As for flats, I'd think Olari has quite some housing. Also I have a 4 month trial period are there any agencies or flat shares that do monthly contracts and not year long contracts?

Kuunsäde is the name of a very small street (not a suburb). It is in Olari, in an area of high-rise apartment buildings (6-7 stories, which is high-rise by Finnish standards). The centre of Olari has a few shops (a new Deli, a nice antique design store, an Estonian foodmarket, a video rental place, a couple of diners (Roadhouse and Chiccos), a couple of pizza/kebab places, a few bars, an S-Market (for groceries), a pharmacy and so on. But about 1,5km down the road you have a large (by Finnish standards) shopping mall called Iso Omena (in Matinkylä) where there are all the global brands (H&M, Guess, Jackpot etc), services such as banks, library, post office and a choice of eateries (Sushi, pizza, Chinese, fastfood etc). Olari is on the edge of Espoo's Keskuspuisto (Central Park) which goes right up to Nuuksio National Park (at least on the map it does) and down to the coast. Olari is less than 2km from the sea, there is a beach + café in Matinkylä. Lots of people around here move around by bike, there are cycle paths everywhere and you really don't need a car.
Transport connections are really good into Helsinki. 15 mins from Iso Omena into Kamppi (Central bus station) with a bus coming every 2-3 minutes and there are regular buses from Olari too (about 20 min ride into Helsinki). The new metro extension will stop at Iso Omena.
Finding accommodation in the area shouldn't be too difficult but it won't be cheap due to the transport connections and the large number of students living in the area (high demand).
What kind of job have you got in Olari?

I live in Olari, you can PM me if you want more practical info.

It is just rather typical to have clause in those open-end contract stating you give can give notice earliest after one year ... He does not want that, but avoiding that is an extra complication as well.Pursuivant wrote:Rental contracts are open-end rolling contracts, you don't want anything else. Also I have a 4 month trial period are there any agencies or flat shares that do monthly contracts and not year long contracts?
