Income Tax Query

Post by Sills-Jones » Thu Aug 23, 2012 10:26 pm

Me and my family are planning to spend 8 months of next year (Jan-sep) in Finland, whilst still being employed by a UK University. Two questions:

1) Who do I pay tax to? I am going back to the UK in September 2013.
2) If I pay tax to Finnish government, am I eligible for child care? (two kids, 1.2 and 3.5)

I have asked my employer, Finnish embassy and HMRC but no one answer is coming through - any help gratefully recieved!

Thanks!!

Not sure. You will be paid by a UK University (in £ into a UK bank account) and residing temporarily in Finland? And you are an EU citizen (eg British)?

Normally you would have to declare yourselves as residents within 3-months of arriving here. You would then be given an ID number. But if you are not making any social contributions or paying tax here, then you would not be covered by the Finnish national health service and would not be entitled to any benefits. But once you are resident here, I guess you could declare your UK earnings in Finland and pay tax on them here.

You should call Vero (the Finnish tax authority) and ask them. This might apply to you:

Here is their number: http://www.vero.fi/en-US/Tax_Administra ... nformation

And /or you can try emailing this place: http://www.intofinland.fi
