Moving to Finland in a month

Post by gini » Sun Oct 28, 2012 8:22 am

Hi all,

I am new to this forum. Found it by googling "forums in finland" :D
Ok so I will be moving to Finland in about a month for about 6 months, maybe more. I have already read related topics in this forum to this. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=65769

I know that the expense is quite high and all but I have my company to take care of it :)

I have a few other questions though.

1. I have heard that recently Netflix has been made available in Finland. What is it like ? Price ?? Any good alternatives to netflix ?
2. What are you guys using for the Internet over there ? Is the bandwidth capped ? Price ??
3. Is it absolutely necessary to know Finnish there ? I don't have to search for a job and my job doesn't require much interaction with people.

Please someone let me know.
Cheers~

1. It´s OK if you don´t want really up to date TV or movies, 7.99eur/Mth, depends what you want, there is Apple TV for movies, or various VPN services if you want TV from your home country.

2. Depends generally on your accommodation, and where you will be based, Various cable, ASDL and 3G options at various costs. Cable and ASDL generally not capped, 3G depends on your Tariff

3. Depends where you are based, I´ve been here 10 yrs and don´t speak Finnish, It is useful to have someone who does to deal with phone calls to various utility providers and others, but other than that yes it is quite possible at least in Helsinki area to manage without Finnish, might be more difficult in more remote areas

6 months? you will just be leaving about the time the weather improves :D

7.99 eoro ?? A quick conversion shows me that it comes to nearly $11 a month :o
That's a bit steep considering I don't get a fairly newer selection :(

Might have to consider a VPN provider. The thing is that my past experience with them have never been so good. But my exp is a year old (when I had to go to India for 3 months !!)

Also I think I don't have to worry about the cable for now. I hope the company provides me with something good :)

10 years ? That's a long time !! I am sure now I can survive for half a year :D

Sadly I will be there for only 6 months. Might just get extended for another 2-3 but not more than that.

New buildings tend to have optical fiber these days. Older homes are being upgraded to fiber in many places.

If it’s an apartment building, sometimes the fiber comes straight to each individual apartment. In some other cases, the building as a whole gets connected via fiber but there’s Ethernet cabling to the apartments.

If fiber or Ethernet cabling is available, connections to the apartments are typically terminated at the electrical fuse box. To activate the Ethernet port in the fuse box (or on the ONT), you usually need to register as a customer to whichever ISP the housing company has chosen to provide the connection to their premises. Sometimes this can be done online simply by connecting your PC to the Ethernet port in the fuse box (or on the ONT) and firing up your browser: the ISP will automatically redirect unregistered customers to their online registration page.

Thanks for the valuable info. I guess I will get it pre-connected but well you never know.

That's some price list ! But thankfully I will stick to Netflix only. And maybe some Hulu if possible !

Hulu is only available in the US and Japan. Never tried it with a proxy, sounds too complicated. (I mean, if you're going to break the rules anyway, there are simpler ways...)

Yup! Got to know that about Hulu. Anyways, I have tried unotelly and it works fine on my PC and ipad. Haven't had the chance to check it out on my xbox or wii. The settings can also be changed at a router level. Hardly took 5 minutes to set it up. Not complicated at all. I have been trying it out from the states and also India.

If anyone will be willing to check it out there in Finland so that it can be confirmed. I will be blessed

Thanks a ton!

It is dark and cold and grey and people are behaving weird. Hell, they aren't even walking in a straight line
