How to get my prescription medicine through post customs.

Hi,

I'm curious about receiving my medicine through the mail, I'm American and I'm currently taking prescription painkillers for my dental pain. I ran out and my dentist in the states is going to prescribe me more because the pain is severe and stops me from eating and talking etc. Can my family member mail this to me through the post and Finnish customs IF IT HAS THE PRESCRIPTION IN THE PACKAGE with contact information?

They can mail it, but you receiving it isn't sure, as what you are trying to do is illegal. I'd visit doctor here.

How? By mailing yourself with the medicines as bringing them on person is allowed when travelling? Simply - its illegal to mail any medication outside the EU and you might be cited for drugs trafficking on top even for aspirin.

What you need to do is go see a Finnish doctor/dentist, (with your medical records copy, PDF scans or something) and get a prescription from here, but they seldom give strong stuff right first up.

Just go to a doctor/dentist here. Take your old pills with your prescription, if you have one.

Why risk getting into trouble?

Receiving/importing medicines from abroad is illegal in Finland, while coming here only you can take 2 weeks medicines with you along with a prescription. If you receive any medicine to your Finland address. I am sure the customs police will contact you for an interrogation, based on the findings you may be fined or jailed. As others said, see the local doctor and get a prescription here.

I actually had no clue what the legalities were, hence asking, but thanks for the replies, I'm definitely not going to do it then. I was just unsure.

Well it was very wise of you to ask before you went ahead and "think" its a good idea, in this case it could have been serious trouble.

It's not a case of whether the medicines are prescription or not. Import by mail of pharmaceuticals into Finland is not allowed by the public. This would apply even to aspirin that you can buy over the counter in Finland or at a supermarket in the UK.
I'm not sure if something like strepsils might even come under this rule (only for sale in a pharmacy in finland but a supermarket or newsagents in the UK).
