Looking for a Kiwi or Aussie au pair to Helsinki

Post by Wildur » Sun Nov 11, 2012 1:57 pm

Hi,

we are a family with two kids, a Dad from NZ and Finnish and Swedish speaking Mum from Finland. We would love for our kids to hear more native English and even get in touch with the culture more. Australia is close enough for us, as we have also lived there (before kids).

Initially we wish for the nanny to help us out Aug-Dec 2013. We are happy to make the arrangement last longer, if all parties are hap with it.

As for what we want in an au pair - and what (s)he will get:

We haven't worked out all details yet, but those can be agreed on also with the nanny (we'll listen to wishes). However, what we want is somebody who is reliable, and honest (also tells us their wishes, also if they are not happy with something so that we get a chance to try to improve it together) and has good *common sense*. And of course likes spending time with children. In my mind, the person does not have to have heaps of experience with children (not that I mind the experience either), but has to have the right attitude.

We live in a semi-detached house with a small garden in Helsinki. The location is great: there are good bus and train connections everywhere, and you reach the city centre in 10 min by train. We would obviously provide for a travel card for the nanny. Our kids will at the time of the nanny be 3 and almost 2 yo. They will go to club or a playground (supervised by a carer) 2-3 mornings a week, so some dropping off and picking up will be included in the nannies duties. However, all that is within 15 min walking distance, and one can even take bus. We hope to organise our work so that we both work 4 days a week with my husband but regardless, the nanny would have the weekends off (well, maybe we can discuss on one Christmas party on a Saturday, but mainly weekends off ) Anyway, an au pair works at the most 30hrs/week. We are not looking for a cleaner, just somebody to be with our kids, play with them, when we are not there. However, the duties would include some light cooking, vacuuming once a week and obviously cleaning up after oneself.

Are you interested? Please, do not hesitate to contact us with a description of you, your expectations and asking for more details.

Kinds regards,
Vilma v.kettle@hotmail.com

Hi,
Just wondered if it might be a good idea to contact an AU Pair agency in NZ, the au pairs in NZ have quiet a large network of kiwi friends that may head to this side of the earth.

I know, I've settle down with a Finnish ex au pair in Finland!

Good luck.

Wow, thank you all for advise.

Kiwijim, we were definitively planning on doing that unless we find a suitable person some other way. We actually are in contact now with one girl who is a "a friend of a friend", sounds pretty good, so I have been bad at checking e.g. this forum. We'd prefer somebody who is known by somebody, but then we thought there might be somebody already in Finland, who would like to stay longer, so we took our changes here. Until we agree on anything with anybody, you are still welcome to be in contact if you are interested.

Cors187, hahaha, good idea, we'll see if we have to use it :D

Miss K, yes, we are looking for a live-in au pair. I thought that was pretty clear as I am describing how/where we live, but thank you for pointing out that there might be some misunderstandings there. As far as I am concerned, au pairs and nannies carry out the same work :) , the difference is in type of visa, insurance and and form of payment. Maybe good to add now that I am well informed of all the requirements and regulations, and it is also in my own interest to try to offer an enjoyable stay with us. In my mind this includes e.g. agreeing on things together before making a formal contract with the au pair - or have somebody come all the way to us.
