Christmas Holidays/Companies close?

I was just wondering if most companies close for a period over Christmas and New Year, especially in the Helsinki region

The holidays are December 24th,25th,26th and January 1st,6th.

December 27th,28th,31th and January 2nd,3rd,4th are workdays.

It depends on what kind of companies exactly you are asking about, but for the normal office jobs companies are usually not closed (though many people take their winter vacation) on the workdays, and most shops are open.

Usually, they're keeping someone in to "fly the flag" if needed. Not a good idea idea to organize meetings, interviews etc. Also the "year-end runs" and budget issues cause January to be "dropless" in more than one sense - no decisions made until the figures come out. February or March is otherwise good, except it "ski vacation" time and people also use their days left over, as the new "holiday season" begins in March.
