Post by bobbieg21 » Mon Nov 12, 2012 2:58 pm

Hi,
I've been to Finland many times and i love it, the people are so much nicer than england
I've literally only just came of a cruise that came to finland too.
basically i'm getting old and i'd love tovacate and permanantely move to finland, but i dont really know where to start,
i have no criminal record, nothing bad against my name so to speak, i have great credit rating etc so i don't think i'd have a problem,
how do i go about moving over to here,
Many thanks, Jared.

If you are an EU citizen, and already get your pension or have enough money at the bank to live from, then start with finding a nice house/apartment in Finland.

You might find life is expensive in here, and there's not so much variety among consumer goods but I can be wrong.

The main question is are you in working life or on a pension. Theres a whole lot of information on directgov.uk regarding retiring abroad. What you want to avoid is "falling from grace" with your health insurance. In the worst case scenario, you won't have coverage in Finland nor in the UK. So you need to check the agreements and maybe look into getting private coverage like you'd need these days in Spain. Finnish KELA isn't the most flush providers in the world, even if you can get on it.
i have great credit rating etc
in Finland, eh?

If you want to settle somewhere near nature, theres loads of towns and villages with pretty inexpensive houses and you can get onto a ski track straight off your porch. Problem is then, theres not much if any services left as theres no work and people have left (something explains the cheap housing) and can you then cope with it all, driving a few hundred miles to get to the shop and back? So basically as anywhere I suggest a few long fact-finding missions before you "jump in". Rent a cottage in the boonies and see if you can cope with it, warts and all.

Its soft and peaceful at many times, im sure you will drive too close to the right hand side lane line like everyone else whose from countries that drive on the opposite side.
