Rule for Verb Type 3

Post by rio » Tue Jan 15, 2013 10:41 pm

Verb Type 3 ends with -lla/-llä, -nna/-nnä, -ra/-rä, -sta/-stä.

Here's the rule about this type:
To find this type of verb's infinitive stem, remove the -la or -lä, -na or -nä, -ra or -rä, or -sta or -stä.To this stem, you add an -e- before adding the personal ending!
So,

Tulla becomes:
minä tulen
sinä tulet
..

But, why Nousta becomes:
Minä nousen
sinä nouset

As the rule says above we should remove -sta/-stä and add e. But, why the s is not removed from the nousen?
Thanks.

There is no "why."

Nousta does not become nouse/n. Rather, nouse/n becomes nousta. As long as you go around with infinitives buzzing in your head instead of the real verb forms you need to use and recognize every day, and as long as you try to use infinitives as the starting point for creating everyday verb forms, verbs on the whole will continue to seem inconsistent, unpredictable, and confusing.

Once you have tule/n, nouse/n, juokse/n, etc firmly entrenched, the apparent inconsistency and unpredictability and confusion mostly evaporate. They come almost entirely from grabbing the wrong end of the horse to begin with.

And in any case, one doesn't "construct" forms in real life. They come to mind by habit and reflex from reading and using them.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

AldenG, you should write a short article on your method so you could link it to people. It might make it clearer that you're simply offering a different way of learning Finnish verbs, not that the asker has somehow completely misunderstood what their teacher or book has been trying to teach them.
