The job suppliers are just trying to get the largest possible response to fill their vacancies. They want the best and most qualified, not just anybody who shows up. I think the jobs listed on mol.Fri are representative of what is really available in Finland.

I wouldn't school myself to make paper. Making games... there certainly is need, but the bar is high. Plus that is kinda artsy thing and while I can appreciate art, I wouldn't put my livelihood to depend my skills in arts.

Why the doom and gloom? If things are difficult now, how would you describe the 90s bank crisis: http://www.stat.fi/til/tyti/2012/11/tyt ... 01_en.html ;)

Surprisingly, every single jobs were repeated almost 5 times, (mind, Indeed is google of jobs), it searched the vacancy openings of same job posted in 5 different ad agencies.
Whats "surprising" about that?

The economic crisis caused by the people in Southern Europe is also hitting Finland, and you hear daily about companies having layoffs in Finland.

I know mostly the IT market. The situation there is much worse than 2 years ago, mostly due to the downfall of Nokia (just 2 years ago Nokia was selling more smartphones than Apple and Samsung combined and had much R&D in Finland). But there are jobs available, and everyone who is good in IT has no problem finding a job.

Now its just chasing the cheese like they do in Wales. The 90's was like being a Persian ambassador to Sparta.

Its not only Nokia, Other hardware/physical material production/assembly compay looks in downturn. Heard, Cargotech is shifting their factory to Poland, so, expect more lost jobs.

It just looks like IT is affected, and whats the last big/creative product launched in Finland, which has worldwide recognition ? Only F-Secure comes to my mind, and it was 1999 when they launched...

Edit: Rovio / Angry Birds, only one I could come up with !!!
"worldwide recognition" is not necessarily relevant for the job market - Rovio employs just around 300 people, there are many (both Finnish and foreign) companies that employ more people in IT in Finland.

And when you look at the US: Facebook has "worldwide recognition", but the company employs only 4.400 people. That might be less than the number of employees in IT that had to leave Nokia in 2012...

And your view on "worldwide recognition" is anyway broken since you only look at the small part of the market that is visible to end-costumers. There are many Finnish IT companies that have a wide recognition outside of Finland in their field.

Considering the small population, the quality and quantity of the Finnish IT sector is actually quite amazing.

Well, Tieto been gobbling up companies' IT departments and Tieto has been sacking people yearly, and transferring production overseas, but as its been the cheeseslicer its not been up in the news except occasionally. Since Logica got taken over by WMD they "streamlined" and thats the two biggest "players" in the IT market in Finland.

Logica have been taken over again, this time by CGI, so I think we can expect more "Streamlining" there.

It seems that Accenture is just a garbagebin for Nokia, avoiding nice reduncepackages. They have found two other bins lately. Anyhow IT-people (same as paperworkers) became just too expensive and arrogant. In India they were waiting.

Yup: "Accenture is a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company" aka garbage bin

roger_roger wrote:Cheap labor might have played the part, but since how long IBM/Accenture/SAP/Oracle/Microsoft have been in Finland ? I haven't heard any of these job market ghosts running their magic in Finland and creating huge opportunities. Accenture was once busy employing/training people who lost jobs from Nokia, that was all I heard from them.
Intel and Ericsson are examples of huge companies that are doing software development also in Finland.

And Huawei is a bigger-than-Nokia company that has just announced the opening of an R&D center in Helsinki.
