Editing translations?

Ha ha. Actually, I found it at the top of Google's search results before posting/bumping anything. I was looking around myself to see what shared resources/possible work opportunities there might be for editors/proofreaders -- and this was one of the best communities that I found. It seems as if there are a number of us in this line, and it's interesting that we've all found separate niches. Anyways, glad to have connected with you all. I'm happy to share my own experiences with newbs if they want to message me, and I'm also happy to help any of the vets if their plates are full to overflowing.

But one question: why is this thread considered so ugly? Merely because of the nature of the work?

I can get by with most conversations and daily duties no problems now. It helps to have parents-in-law who speak no English.

I've known several people, besides myself, that have gone through a phase of doing this type of work. After all, it's such an obvious thing to do for anyone with any sort of facility for language. However, there always seems to come a point when it's realised that preserving one's sanity has value too.

I could be more specific, but it's only about 15 years since I worked in this field and therefore the wounds are fairly fresh.

I suppose that depends on whether you go into it because it's 'the obvious thing to do' or because you have a genuine love for the English language and its intricacies. Thankfully for me it was the latter., and I was already working in a related field before leaving the UK. Granted, you can never love everything you do in your work, but the years of spadework left me with an excellent background for graduating into copywriting and leaving the more drudgeworthy work behind.

Sounds traumatic, zetorpilot. Sounds more like we should be starting a recovery group for proofreaders!

In my case, I've been blessed or cursed with a hyper-critical mind for grammar. If I can use that to make money while Jumalan selän takana, so to speak, better than drilling holes in the ice... Plus, one never gets tired of typos like "in our base-lice scenario" and so on...

@albisatya: I used to be pretty pedantic about grammar too, but the last book I read on the history and development of the english language cured me of that. I've just had a quick peruse of my library to see if it was still somewhere near the surface - unfortunately it doesn't seem to be, and I can't recall the title.

In-house, unfortunately, so I can't To be honest I think I'm being a bit harsh on them, it's bloody difficult to write well in a language that isn't your own.

proofing 'English' texts written by Russians. Jesus...

I did quite a few of those with my time in Russia, mainly contracts between Russian and US companies.We used a 2 person effect ,No1 was the Russian school teacher to English and then No2 final copy from my hands.It was the only way to do them super fast.
I think its a really good way to cover some costs while your setting up,
