In answer to various questions, for me it is (a) a lactose allergy, rather than lactose-intolerance or casein, and (b) prawns rather than crustaceans in general (actually, it seems to be specific prawns, but I don't plan to risk working out which ones they are!).

Thanks again - I'll be printing the Medic Alert card at the weekend,

John H.
Is it true that whatever your exact reactions are, its better to label the "general host products" as"do not eat". That way you have successfully removed all potential danger.I knew a person who would get angry or become easily angered when alcohol and certain nuts were consumed. As a subsequent result all Table nuts were treated as a no no.

I first read Jukka's joka/mikä response on my cellphone and missed the end of his first paragraph where he briefly mentioned what I ended up elaborating on later. Basically he had already covered what I said.

For parties I have other kinds of tricks. It's so hard to find a Finnish grammar party any more. And so hard to get a buzz off the punch.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

No, what one usually means with milk allergy is an allergy to the milk proteins, not an allergy to milk sugars (although I didn't know one could be allergic to sugars).

Anyway, do note that although a lot of products here are no/low lactose and marked as such (even in the restaurant menus), a lot of waiters will tell you the dish in question is fine when you ask if it is no lactose when in fact it is low lactose. So do double check that it is no lactose (laktoositon) and not just low lactose (vähälaktoosinen). Most people here should also have enoguh language skills for you to be able to request this in English, but of course better safe than sorry.

I'm afraid Finnish grammar parties have no future.
