The Finnkino movie theaters Tennispalatsi and Kinopalatsi in Helsinki have some arcade games in their lobbies. The Linnanmäki amusement park used to be a great place for games, but I don't think they have them anymore.

Which Finnkino theater? I think Kinopalatsi has more games than Tennispalatsi, though I haven't really paid attention to the ones in Tennispalatsi. Kinopalatsi has at least a dance game, some racing games, a few pinballs, a Galaga / Ms. Pacman machine and a Star Wars machine.

That's Tennispalatsi. Kinopalatsi is in the Kaisaniemi metro station (just walk across the Rautatientori square from the central railway station).

I know exactly what you're looking for, but those places simply don't exist in Finland. We used to have some, but they haven't been profitable in years.
  • Not enough (nostalgic) players
  • Everyone has a computer or a console
  • Maintaining and fixing the machines is very expensive and difficult (must be cheaper in Asia, since that's where the companies are and where the spare parts are made)
Even back in the old days, I think Finland mostly had bars/cafes with maybe one pinball machine and one arcade game. Huge arcade halls don't make sense when the population is small and sparse.

Yep, there used to be a few arcades, back in the day, but... even then they were pretty small ones. Most arcade machines were, like jahasjahas said, in bars and cafes... but also in stores outside the checkout area, well, there was often a gaming area. Well, the gaming areas are still in the stores, but now it's only slot machines.

Your best bet to find one is in amusement parks. Like in Linnanmäki, as was mentioned above (hmm... looks like they might have changed it into a Xbox&Kinect area instead: http://www.linnanmaki.fi/index.php/pelit/xbox-kinect/). And if I don't remember totally wrong, Puuhamaa had one, too.

I really wish there was something like this aswell, as far as I know there is no social network for us gamers in Finland, as far as I know there is no social network for us foreigners in generals in the finnish society.

tell you what though you can add me on PSN if you want (akr85)

cheers.

When I was a kid there were a lot of arcades called "pelikaani" and I heard that actually some of them still exist in some remote places.

edit: I found some super ultimate thread about arcades people have found here. They give the address with a list of games.

Not exactly the same as in Tokyo but:

By the way, for those of you interested in this kind of thing, i'm working on building a brewbup in downtown Helsinki that will be video game themed. I'm going to build my own arcade cabinets which will play a large variety of games and be free to play.
