GIS jobs in Finland...are there any?

Post by Meri-Tuuli » Thu Feb 02, 2006 2:43 pm

Hi! I am wondering what to study at masters level at Turku university. I have one of two options:
GIS or environmental history/palaeoecology. I was wondering if there was a demand for GIS people? I realise that job competition is stiff in Finland. But I think that GIS offers more employment possibilties than the environmental history one!! Just wondering. However, I think that I should go for the one I am most interested in....

Also, do many people gain graduate level jobs in areas that are not related directly to their studies?

Thanks!

There are a number of government entities seeking GOOD GIS people. They range from cities and towns, to police departments and even lumber companies. I think I saw something in that line offered in Tampere the other day. Most if not all of these positions require that you speak enough Finnish to communicate with the people around you. Check under Mittausinsinöörit ja -teknikot sekä kartoittajat for the position you want.

After you have browsed through mol.fi for few months, you will probably come to same a conclusion than I did. There seems to be two kind of GIS jobs in Finland, those were GIS is an additional skill that must be mastered (biologists etc.) and those were it is one of the main skills required (cartography etc.). According to my experience, around 90 % of all the GIS positions available in Finland require mastering Finnish.

Mastering Finnish is not the easiest thing to do. I am finding ways to skip that part. where did you end up Mangrove?

Search for a job in a country where you speak the local language.

Except for IT, finding a job in Finland without speaking Finnish is pretty hard and unlikely.

I ended up having Finnish parents.

P.S. I do know one person (mostly) working in a GIS position in an engineering company in Helsinki. He has a basic understanding of Finnish, but he does not work directly with Finnish clients but as a kind of supervisor in GIS matters in the company.

Well, I happen to know they are not hiring anybody right now since they are laying off people.
