Museum Jobs
Museum Jobs
Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has some information about museum jobs in Finland. As far as I know there are more than 40 museums in Helsinki area and most of them are government funded, like Kiasma or Ateneum. How do these type of institutions fill staff vacancies? Do museum directorate responsible for decisions or they are considered as government jobs and appointments are made by city of Helsinki? If so, is it only applicable for higher ranking positions or for all positions like traineeships/assistantships etc.?
Kiitos!

Re: Museum Jobs
Hi.
I remember getting the Helsinki City Guide certificate will help in getting the museum job.
It is one possibility.

Re: Museum Jobs
Thank you very much for your reply.
I'm just checking it with google translate but I guess this link is more about a training for tourist guides. (Maybe you referred it thinking it might help if one is applying to an institute directly related to city heritage?)
Nevertheless what I'm trying to figure out is more about the nature of these jobs rather than the required qualifications. Are those institutions decide on staff positions autonomously or there is an outside decision mechanism?

Re: Museum Jobs
Both museums you mentioned as examples have contact phone numbers on their webpages.
A short call is more likely to give you an answer than the forum here.

Re: Museum Jobs
I was just giving examples by pointing out those names. I prefer posting here rather than blindly calling them and asking questions about their internal policies.
Re: Museum Jobs
If they are run by the 'goverment' (state) you would not expect the hiring be done by the city.or they are considered as government jobs and appointments are made by city of Helsinki?
Re: Museum Jobs
As you can tell I don't have much understanding of how these things workRip wrote:If they are run by the 'goverment' (state) you would not expect the hiring be done by the city.or they are considered as government jobs and appointments are made by city of Helsinki?

Re: Museum Jobs
If the job is part of the official bureaucracy (government/ city) there are strict rules about the selection procedures.
(public announcement, selection based on qualities on paper, best candidate, no fiddling with required skills, ....)
The local management in general makes the selection (within those rules) unless there is a directive to to use people from other branches who have to be replaced.
But some functions can be shared with more than one museum. In that case a "higher" authority runs the show.
For some functions (trainees?) there might be more freedom. But then again that are probably not payed functions.

Re: Museum Jobs
Thank you very much for the explanation.
The problem is I'm not sure if they are run by government or they are just funded by government. For instance Kiasma, it is connected to Finnish National Gallery (which I'm guessing a government run museum) but it is also a foundation?
Probably there is no one right answer to my question but case specific answers.

Re: Museum Jobs
The main problem is that it is not clear what you are looking for.numb wrote:Thank you very much for the explanation.

Are you looking for a job?
Are you doing some research on how museums in different countries select their employees?
...
If you would disclose what you actually want to do it would be possible to tell you whom to ask.
Re: Museum Jobs
I think what I'm looking for is pretty clear and I don't think the answer will change according to the purpose of asking this question. Rinso's explanation was pretty helpful actually. Someone here might be already working in such institute or happen to have some information from his/her past experiences and provide me some examples for specific museums.Adrian42 wrote:The main problem is that it is not clear what you are looking for.numb wrote:Thank you very much for the explanation.

I'm getting the feeling you're asking my purpose just to be able to say "you can't work in such place if you don't know finnish"

Re: Museum Jobs
If the purpose of your questions is to work at one of these museums, then why on earth don't you just call them and ask them how their application process works?numb wrote:I think what I'm looking for is pretty clear and I don't think the answer will change according to the purpose of asking this question. Re: Museum Jobs
If you have information on a specific subject you come here and say it, if you don't then you can just ignore that thread. Isn't it how it works? I really don't understand why you keep coming back to say I should ask it somewhere else? Is this forum a magical place that you can only ask questions with answers don't exist anywhere else but only here? Does these kinds of questions even exist?!
I have a valid "working in Finland" related question, people with similar interest can come and check the thread, post their related questions, share experiences etc. So why on earth this is a problem for you?

Re: Museum Jobs
It just sounds incredibly stupid to me to have a long forum discussion on something when you could get reliable answers immediately with a phone call.numb wrote:If you have information on a specific subject you come here and say it, if you don't then you can just ignore that thread. Re: Museum Jobs
Well, I think it's more stupid to waste your time (as you insist on doing) on a subject that doesn't even concern you. So everyone is entitled to their opinion.Adrian42 wrote:It just sounds incredibly stupid to me to have a long forum discussion on something when you could get reliable answers immediately with a phone call.numb wrote:If you have information on a specific subject you come here and say it, if you don't then you can just ignore that thread.
