Business or IT Engineering?!

Post by ommmmid » Sun Mar 24, 2013 7:44 am

Hi everyone! Please give me any sort of info or advice on the following decision:
1. I'm now half through a master degree in English language and culture in Finland.

Now I've decided to add another more practical Bachelor degree to my studies so that I might land on a job someday.

My dillemas are:
1. IT or Business? Which bachelor degree potentially provides better "entry level" jobs or traineeships.
2. Stay in my small city, or move to Helsinki, or Mikelli?

The details are here if you are kind enough to take a look and help me.
My situation now:
a. I know some web design and programming.
b. I'm 27.
c. I know finnish, I might be A2 now. (after 6 months)
d. I can't find a job in my current small city now.
e. I have savings to cover another 1.5 or 2 years of living here without finding a job.
My options are:
1. Staying in the small city and get into its UAS and do a bachelor in International Business. (beside completing my master degree in English, in the campus and around the professors).
2. Moving to helsinki and do a bachelor degree in either of these: (beside completing my master degree in English, far from campus and on my own)
a. Metropolia evening studies in computer engineering.
b. Haaga-Helia bachelor program in international business.
3. Moving to Mikelli and doing teh bachelor program in Business at Aalto.
4. Going back to home after completing my current master degree, next year.

Thanks for reading.

Its going to be hard to get a RP or to study a 2nd lower degree, as you already have a masters. I'd suggest if you know programming, get as much of that as you can under your belt.

If I understand you correctly, your biggest worry at the moment is landing some (at least part-time) job during the next 2 years.

I assume you have already explored all options of student or post-study jobs at your university or other universities in Finland.

Finnish IT job market looks pretty bad with many unemployed people after the suicide of Nokia's smartphone unit 2 years ago.
There are some jobs in IT, but you have to be good in what you are doing for getting one.

Generally, Finnish job market doesn't look good at the moment after the people in Southern Europe botched their economies.

With sub-C2 knowledge of the Finnish language, I think you have better chances in IT (where many jobs don't require Finnish) than in business.

In the Helsinki metropolitan region it is much easier (but still quite hard) to find a job than in Nowheremäki or Mikkeli. Therefore I don't see how options 1 or 3 would make sense for you.

How good or bad is option 4 for you? Will you likely find a job with your current degree at home, or will you be unemployed in your home country?
If you want to land a job in Finland, then option 2 is your best opportunity. But it will be more stressful for you than option 4 to finish your master remotely, and there is no guarantee that you will actually find a job.

Or telling it more bluntly:
If going back to your home country is a reasonable option for you, then go with option 4. Combine that with attempting to land a job or at least a summer job (that has a small chance of giving you further employment) during the time you are staying in Finland - in the best case you are getting option 2c: Moving to Helsinki for a job besides completing your master degree in English
If this is your once-in-a-lifetime chance to avoid a miserable life in your home country, then go with option 2.

If you need a Residence Permit in Finland, I do not know how hard or easy it will be to get one for a Bachelor after you already finished a Master here.

Do you know where I can get precise information about it? (My guess is police, but they weren't that informed last time I asked for another issue )

Also about programming, all the courses are offered only in Finnish at our university, being an small city (Joensuu) I couldn't find anywhere to get training on that outside the school.

Yes I think I should go for 2 C.

Though the problem of extending my permit for bachelor is something very new to me. I've to check it ASAP. Thanks for letting me now.
