Hi all,
Does anyone have a good idea about where to look for a summer job with limited (but not nonexistent) Finnish skills? For example, I have applied to cashier jobs at places like Lidl and Siwa, but I wonder if there are some other reasonable options to consider. I am a grad student living in Helsinki, and my original plan/hope to find an English-speaking research position or internship hasn't materialized.
I have also thought of trying to find restaurant or bar work, but I'm a bit unclear on the best way to seek out such jobs. In my home country, it's standard practice to walk into a restaurant or bar, ask the host/hostess if the manager is around, and then inquire to the manager about open positions. However, if that is not normal here, then I wouldn't want to take that route. I do think (correct me if I'm wrong), it's more effective to make initial contact with an employer on the phone or in person than to just write an e-mail or send an online application. My dilemma there is that I'm relatively proficient with face-to-face conversation in Finnish, but I understand poorly on the phone. Additionally, since I know many such jobs are not listed online anywhere, I would appreciate advice on the best way to reach out directly to an employer without breaking any social codes.
In addition to native English and conversational Finnish, I speak fluent Portuguese and a bit of Spanish. Although I'm pretty much open to any kind of work in the Helsinki/Espoo/Vantaa area, if anyone can think of anything requiring specific qualifications, I guess it's worth mentioning that I have bachelor's degrees in mathematics and photography, as well as paid English-language copyediting experience. Most of my previous jobs have been in retail management, restaurants, or campus safety/policy enforcement (a bit random, I know).
Thanks to anyone who has an idea/can direct me somewhere. I regularly check mol.fi and have registered with a temp agency already.

Try these guys. They're in the Korkeasaari part of Helsinki.
