Sorry to correct you but, yes EU citizens only need an ID card to move around europe. EXCEPT : UK and Ireland citizens as they are not part of the the Shengen agreement

An ID card is enough for travelling to all EU and Schengen countries.

Until 2011 the UK did have an ID card, and UK citizens were able to use that for travelling through the whole EU instead of a passport.
