Permitted Hours Per Week for Study Related Work

Post by afaquejam » Fri May 03, 2013 5:02 pm

Hi all,

I am a Non-EU student studying in a university in Finland for almost a year. I have been offered a trainee position for 6 months with weekly workload of 35 hours. Now, I know during the summer holidays there is no restriction on how many hours I can work, but during the study term it is mentioned that we cannot work for more than 25 hours a week. Since, my trainee-ship is going to span summer and few months in the study term I am a little confused about the rule.

The following rule is stated on the Finnish Immigration Service: "Persons who have a residence permit granted on the basis of studying may engage in gainful employment without restrictions when the work consists of practical training or diploma work as part of a degree".

On Aalto University page: "International exchange and degree students are allowed to work with certain restrictions. The restrictions have to do with the nationality (EU/EEA or non-EU/EEA) and the nature of employment. In addition, the regulations for study-related work, compulsory training or employment having to do with thesis work tend to be more relaxed. For postgraduate research work, the regulations are more vague and must be checked from the local employment office." and at many more places I find the same message.

Now the question is, since as a part of my degree I need to have practical industry experience as working as an Advanced Professional, so this trainee-ship program fits in that criteria of 'Study related work', I think so.

My question is, can I work on this trainee-ship program for more than 25 hours a week during my study term time.(I have completed most of the degree credits, only thesis is remaining.)

Please help, I am little tensed about it as it was very hard to get this trainee-ship position.

Thanks.

If its the one that you submit as your mandatory industry work experience, then of course, yes.
