Hi all,
I'm due to give birth to my 2nd child in early August. I've chosen Naistenklinikka as my hospital. The problem is, they are undergoing renovation work for the next 2 years. No one has mentioned this to me at any of my appointments at neuvola or naistenklinikka. I suppose since construction starts next month. I was told at my rakenneultra that I was welcome to give birth there if I choose to. I read on their webpage, that they are sending more than half of their deliveries to other hospitals. Does anyone know how they are deciding which deliveries stay and which are sent along? I'll have to have a c section. Also, does anyone know about the "perhehuoneet" there? I was hoping to reserve one when I give birth. Oh and is the baby allowed to stay with the mother? I had my son in the US. So, I have no idea of how things work at a Finnish hospital.

(So they intend to keep it as THE center of intensive care for babies in this country)Deliveries at the Women’s Hospital consist of:
high-risk pregnancies and deliveries (referral provided by a maternity outpatient clinic or another hospital)
very premature deliveries (before the 32nd week of pregnancy)
planned caesarian sections (referral provided by a maternity outpatient clinic)
so-called normal deliveries as much there is room (mothers should call before leaving home)

I think you're out of luck there. Because of shortage of space "luxuries" like that will be first to go (also in Kätilöopisto)
Except for short time after your section, the norm is (assuming no need for intensive care, of course) that the baby stays in his/her cot next to the mother's bed, and is taken care by her (and visiting father). As this isn't your first baby, unless you explicitly ask something the instructions after birth by the staff will probably be pretty much limited to things like where you can find clean clothes, nappies etc.Oh and is the baby allowed to stay with the mother?

The baby will stay with you. You can also get a break and they will take the baby into a nursing room, if you want.
They did more for me than just offer nappies etc. They helped with breastfeeding, asked how I was going etc. Maybe I was just lucky.
As for the room. It's a luxury and if there are any available, they go to first timers.

Hi
I gave birth to my third child in Naistenklinkka with a c- section. Everything was really good! After the section you stay 2 hours in the recovery room as they have to check your uterus is starting to contracting. Meanwhile the baby is sent to the nursery to be washed ( if necessary) and dressed, along with his/her dad and the nurse. After 2 hours you are taken to your ward room and your child stays with you. They continuosly encourage skin to skin contact. They hav been really kind with me, everybody speaks Enhlish. They entered always to ask if I needed something and check you and the bang many times. You do not need anything but your personal effects. Clothes for baby and for your staying in the hospital is provided.
My experience his been great!!!!!! Bad chances to get a family room but you are assisted every moment, believe me!
Bye

Thank you to everyone who answered. I had an appointment there on the 22nd of May and they said they would answer all of my questions at my next appointment in July (i'm guessing that is the birth planning part).
Giorgia73 - Will the baby be brought back to me during the 2hrs in the recovery room (her father will be there too)?
