Have I become a foreigner?

Post by Calle Guerrero » Mon May 20, 2013 11:58 am

So I left Finland vowing never to return when I took up a job in Geneva, and I ended up living cross the border in France. Great salary, cheap booze and a nice international atmosphere. And the salary!
Then I realised that where ever they speak French everything just sucks! The bureacracy, the driving skills (or lack of) and the people. And I know this sounds bad but is France suppose to be a European or a middle-eastern country? Can't really tell from all the muslims.
In Geneva it's supposed be great, it's Switzerland right? Except the city is filled with rich show-offs. All the nice people happen to be immigrants.. The Swiss hate your guts for taking their jobs and raping their women.

Okay so I took a deep breath and took a few trips to Finland, maybe it's not that bad in the end right. Okay people are racist and even I get asked everytime how long I've been here and WHY (I'm Finnish by birth by the way). Few real friends I've accumulated over the years are all in Finland. Plus I love the cold winters, too bad cars cost so much on the other hand.

So I'll just quit my job or bite it until next renewal and come back. But where would I go? My long term relationship ended partly due to my job abroad, my spouse just couldn't integrate to the region. Hell, even I can't.

So now I'm single, no job (in Finland), no apartment in Finland, some friends here and there. Sure as hell not going to back to my parents! I also have to swallow my pride and admit that I was wrong in the first place.

Am I now a foreigner in effect?

Thought about going for broke and buying an apartment in Oulu. Don't know anyone up there though, might be a good thing.

So I took some examples to the extremes :) not contemplating suicide so feel free to tear this apart, haha!

I guess so. Which is you then take all the benefits of the situation. Drive the tax-free car in Oulu, park it where you please - after all its only the natives that need to obey the rules, the foreigners can do whatever they want as its their "culture".
Then I realised that where ever they speak French everything just sucks!
Yes, well thats racist to say that because truth hurts

What you do is save enough money and travel around, you'll find a place somewhere you feel good. (or can afford to have the best of both worlds).
Swiss hate your guts for taking their jobs and raping their women.
Well, that is what the foreigner is supposed to do, so go pull some yodling tail while you're there.

I admit I find some perverse satisfaction of parking without paying and knowing that they can't fine me.. Or they can't collect the fines anyways..

Still, don't do it kids! 8)

If you have a steady job in Geneva with a good pay and virtually no financial problems then why the hell would you willingly axe your own feet?
I would trade my place with you gladly for a good salary and cheaper cars

Oh it's quite simple, I get bored fast :D
I place too high expectations on things and then I start to dream about a big changes to my life. I've read lots of posts here from people wanting to come to Finland with high expectations, I felt the same way leaving.

Not like I can afford to retire anytime soon but luckily I can afford some momentarely adjustment periods, like moving before having found a job.

I did learn French, no where near fluent but I get along. I read somewhere in this forum that once you know Finnish, other languages are a walk in park..

Oh and for those who want to get to Geneva there's the CERN: http://www.cern.ch.

They hire mostly people from other fields than particle physics so don't be afraid to apply. Anyone from the EU plus tons of other countries are permitted to apply.
