Unexplored beautiful places around Helsinki

Post by The_Mikko » Tue May 14, 2013 9:14 pm

Hi everyone,
can you share some unexplored but nice places to visit around helsinki/espoo/ vantaa? I just want to visit this summer elsewhere than Suomenlinna. Thnx

Last week, I found one beautiful hill near Vuosaari harbour while biking. It is just amazing place. No buses go there but if you have bike it is really nice. From top you can see vast forests and villages. It is the highest point Ive seen in Helsinki.

Well, if you want to do some exploring, print a map of "krepost sveaborg" (google) and explore the fortifications. Theres surprising bits and pieces - one hill is between pitäjänmäki and pajamäki, but theres a lot in espoo and east helsinki... Also the mines area in Kaivoksela is surprising.
Then theres the bronze/iron age village next to seurasaari... And if you go all cyldyrell theres the artist homes/villas in espoo like Tarvaspää you can bike from munkkiniemi and then the big ones of coursein Tuusula...

Also, if you are biking in east helsinki - the north end of Kulosaari or where the old oil tanks are in Herttoniemi, you look at the map and you see random houses... Take a camera with, some of them are intact, some of them ghost houses, but theres 19th century "lace villas" in the most surprising places...they're easy to see now without all the bushes grown - a few weeks later they hide away

Jeez, I remember when Länsi-Pasila looked like that, and ridiculously hilly like those travel brochure photos of China.

That was before they came and bulldozed the houses and squeezed a lot of toothpaste out of big tubes to flatten the landscape.

Such a charming oasis of residential harmony and bliss they created. They must be so proud.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

I can remember when most of Ruoholahti, Jatkasaari, Salmisaari was under the sea. Now look at it. Cold winds, absolutely no vegetation (except for the trees in the cemetary - which isn't even Ruoholahti - and a few window boxes hanging on balconies) and some of the worse cardboard box architecture in FInland (and that's saying something). Lots of toothpaste there too.

Someone should 'nuke' the whole Pasila area..... Add to that the horrible older whatever they are (cement?) buildings from Espoo Keskus as well.

Oh and the whole cemented area of Sello. I remember when Maxi Market and just farmland were there, nothing else. You couldn't pay me a million euros to live in either the Sello or Pasila areas LOL. Oh Iso Omena is turning into the same thing as well, I've been told.

Compared to the 80-90 "vessakaakeli" buildings, some of the 60-70's projects actually look classy

I used to live in Pajamäki and bicycle through the fields to Maxi and there were a couple old abandoned wooden (farm) houses and a huge triangular radio antenna...

And I remember swinging when I was a kid and seeing the seagulls and caterpillars on the landfill... and the winos in the forest on the banks of "Rotten Ditch" where we went floating on styrofoam blocks...

If you care to go out a bit, Nuuksio national park is really nice, although can get a bit busy. There are a bunch of places around Vihti also...

I share the same sentiment about Pasila and the giant tomb stones I like to call them. Sigh...

Another place may be worth visiting is Vantaankoski and the little rapids.

And then there is also the lammassaari nature area.

They are in no sense unexplored but they make a quick get-away from the city and traffic.

There is. If you click the link on that page, then Kaunissaari from that next page, you get the timetable and info: http://www.cardinalmarine.fi/reittiliikenne.php

I would recommend the Espoo Archipelago route:

The outer islands are absolutely lovely, not unexplored of course, but usually there are not many people around (strangely enough as it's really beautiful and the trip quite convenient).
