Something to block cat from jumping out window?

Post by aeshleyrose » Wed May 29, 2013 3:19 pm

Hi guys,

We have a well-behaved kitty who loves to sit on the windowsill of our 7th story apartment. We try like crazy to get her to stop, but she loves it and foils any attempts we have to block her. So far, it's only been placing a heavy object in front of the window, such as a fan, but she is desperate to get out. She's a smart kitty, but a kitty after all, and she may leap towards a bird/bug and her death.

The other problem is the type of window we have, hinged on the side and extending inwards. This magical solution I am asking you all for would have to be removable, which is perfectly okay with us. I have added a picture.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, kiitos, tack!!

In our apartment, there's this thick mosquito net nailed from outside of the window, which prevents our cat from jumping out... our only fear is him scratching that net.. but no problem so far.

I have seen a mosquito net panel that can be removed whenever necessary... perhaps it's the same one as in upphew's link. material of net must be thick and strong or else cats can cut that out!

You could buy the light weight small squared metal 'fencing' type of stuff people use to make pens out of for animals. And if you can unhatch the window and open it fully, you could cut the wire to size and then staple the wire the frame. Then the cat can't get out, but it can still see stuff and get fresh air. And you can have the window open. It's not thick wire. Just small squared stuff. Very handy and durable.

A cat desperate enough to get out will scratch through the fly/mozzie protective wire mesh stuff. I am an Aussie, seen it's a billion times growing up.

Actually the odds are she would survive perhaps even uninjured, though I would not try it....

Not perfect but something. I have seen adverts of some adjustable metallic fences elsewhere but not in Finland

I just bought and fitted metal fences just like in the second link from bauhaus for our balcony. we actually looked for nylon net but the seller there said, "cats claws can get stuck in the nylon thread." so decided for galvanized metal. one can nail that thing in the window also!

Maybe improve living conditions, perhaps administer a little therapy, so that your cat no longer feels like jumping out the window?
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Have you considered closing the window?
