Prices for moving your stuff between apartments.

Hi everyone,

I will be moving soon from Espoo to Helsinki and I was wondering how much will it cost to hire a company to move my stuff. It is basically a table, two beds, two chairs and some boxes. I know renting a van and driving it myself will be the most cost effective option (~35-50e for a couple of hours + gasoline).

What companies do you know? What are their ball-park prices? If there is not so much difference, just for convenience I would take that option (f.i. 50e by myself vs 100e with a moving company)

I think that is to optimistic.
Those companies usual plan in half or whole days.
So 2 men + van for 4 hours x (70 - 100 €)

That is not true.

Last time I was moving, Niemi billed me the actually used time with a 0.5h resolution.

Sure, a phone call, email or personally visiting an office of a moving company works.

These are the ones that you see quite often with the costs per hour on the side of the van. Used them and they are fine - strict on the time (so if you think it may take just over 2 hours book for 3 as the penalty for returning late is high)

Also remember that 1) loading / unloading and traffic always takes a bit longer than you think it will 2) you need to get the van to / from the hire place + to filling station. However the marginal cost of an extra hour is quite low. I also remember how useful the van was for other things, so we paid an extra 2 hours and did some shopping / went to recycling place / shifted a friends chair etc....

When a friend did a similar move (Lautasauri - Tapiola) with a few more things than you, he "hired" his friends to do the loading / unloading from the flat and at a cost of a few beers and a BBQ. Then paid Niemi just to be there to supervise load onto van - drive - take off, which dramatically reduced the cost (only one guy and much fewer hours). I guess that you could also do that if you had everything more or less ready. Wonder if they have a minimum 2hr though.

Basically, you write a job offer describing how big your apartment is and what kind of larger furniture, the distance between the two places and if there is an elevator or if they have to carry everything up the stairs to the 7th floor. Also the date of the moving.

The companys then send you an offer and you can pick the one you like best (or none).

When I moved last autumn about 5 kms from a 34m² apartment with some big furniture, tons of stuff (5 years are enough to collect an amazing amount of stuff) and no elevator I got offers from 320 to nearly 700 euros (for the whole job including a truck and two people).

Call your local fire station, seriously, they do have a house moving service, I think the money goes to charity !

You will have to pay for the time that the rental van reaches Espoo, then loading the van, driving time to your new home, and unloading. All this usually takes longer than anticipated. I moved a distance with small household things (smallish van with 2 men) about 8 km, and the charge was, after hard negotiations, for 2 hours, 130 Euros.

There are "man with a van" options. One of my friends used a guy who charged €50 for 2-3 hours (Hel-Espoo). But he didn't help load/unload for which I guess he charges extra.

This is a pricelevel where I doubt the guy is properly paying taxes.

(Unless that's a "helping with load/unload costs € 100 extra" scam.)

Possibly the OP has already moved by now. But you're right, both the things you mention are a distinct possibility. I haven't used them myself so can't comment.
