Is Elisa lying about its network coverage?
Is Elisa lying about its network coverage?
Hi all!
I was lured into activating the Elisa/Saunalahti "Mobiililaajakaista 4G" described here: https://oma.saunalahti.fi/settings/tila ... aajakaista
I did it because, according to the network coverage map at http://www.elisa.fi/kuuluvuus/ my address (Osmankäämintie 44, Vantaa) is fully covered by the LTE network. Also, when I expressed my concerns to the operator who was selling me this offer, that I was afraid of being too close to the border, he said that even if LTE might not have been always available, my area was surely covered by the 4G dual carrier network, which is also quite fast (up to 42Mbits/s).
But now that I activated it (along with the "E589 4G/WiFi" mobile router provided by them), the best I can get is just 3G, and the real maximum speed (recorded by speedtest.net) is under 4Mbits/s (which is also slow according to the 3G maximum speed). To me, this looks like a fraud. This morning I even travelled a bit up north, in order to test an area which -- according to Elisa's map -- should be entirely covered by the 4G network and farther from the borders, but still the router always gave me only the 3G network available.
So I'm wondering: did I get a defective router, or is Elisa lying about its network coverage? Does anyone here have a similar (4G) contract with Elisa/Saunalahti, maybe near Tikkurila or anyway in Vantaa? If so, does your router/phone connect to the 4G network? And what real speed do you get according to speedtest.net?

I can't help you, but I think you should take your actual address out of your post.

Elisa is !"#¤%, use D N A !!

Thanks for the hint. Do you actually have a DNA mobile connection? is it 3G or 4G? And what results do you get if you perform the test in http://www.speedtest.net?Lord of Manchester wrote:Elisa is !"#¤%, use D N A !!

Depends on your location.Lord of Manchester wrote:Elisa is !"#¤%, use D N A !!
For me, Sonera and DNA have very slow speeds and frequent interuptions, while Elisa gives perfect results.

I live in Pakkala. Yes thats not LTE. I was using DNA mokkula at some other places I had around 1 Mb/s to 1.5 Mb/s.mardy wrote:OMG, that's fast! I guess that's LTE? In which area do you live?Dalmatinac wrote:they are all same !"#¤%.
When I was making agreement at DNA store they said that I can cancel my agreement any time but later I had to wait 12 months to cancel it.
When I bought internet form Elisa they said that I don't have to pay any fees but in the end I had to pay some fees to get connection.
if you are getting 80% lower speed then one advertised at them, then you should go back and complain.

I'm currently using D N A 4g for my laptop and cellphone, I couldn't give you the technical statistics I only know that my laptop and mobile appear to be faster using D N A, whatever floats your boat I saymardy wrote:Thanks for the hint. Re: Is Elisa lying about its network coverage?
I have Saunalahti (Elisa I suppose) 3g. It's sh*t where I live.
Most the time it's fine and works alright. But then often there comes problems where I am still connected to the net, but they must have so many people using it, nothing will load and I keep losing Skype etc. Then I get p*ssed off, because if you ring them to complain or even just ring to ask a question they charge you a crapload.

Despite the marketing hype, 3G/UMTS connections are not really meant to be used at home as your primary Internet connection. That’s stretching the limits of the technology, or trying to shoehorn it for a use case it does not really manage to serve adequately (unless there are very few users in the area served by the local cell tower — a condition upon which you usually can’t rely.) Wired Internet, while more expensive, is always going to be the option which gives you far more reliable connections at far better speeds.Flossy1978 wrote:I have Saunalahti (Elisa I suppose) 3g. Of course, even DSL and cable modems are interim solutions at best, piggy-backing on the old, “legacy” telephone line and cable TV infrastructure. Fortunately, new homes generally get a fiber link and twisted-pair Ethernet cabling installed by default, and it’s also possible to retrofit old buildings with such solutions.
