You can buy the Kela box!

Post by karen » Mon Oct 31, 2005 8:44 pm

A friend just reminded me that it's possible to buy the package from kela. Here are the package contents:
http://www.kela.fi/in/internet/suomi.ns ... enDocument

And here's how to buy:

I know it's not as good as getting it free, but it's a pretty good price for all this stuff.

Hello Karen,

Thank you for your pointers to the Kela Maternity Box and we do believe that that Box is a boon for all expecting mothers all over the world. However, when I visited Kela Website and unfortunately kela box is not for sale as it is offered as a social security service.
I am an expecting mother living in the United States and I would like to acquire a kela box as a gift for my baby. Could you tell me if there is an alternative source of Kela Box?
my email is helloliusiyi@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you!

The original post is from 2005. I don't know what the situation was then, but you can not BUY the box. You can apply for the box or get the "maternity allowance" in cash, but not pay cash and get the box.

@ Zacharyren1031 - the only way you can get one is trying to find someone selling one - and for that you need the Finnish equivalent of ebay = huuto.net

Actually, thinking of it, those would have been a good investment opportunity to snag up now that they get all popular and put them on ebay

In this BBC article, under the photo of Mark Bosworth, he says that his in-laws BOUGHT the box for their new grandchild because Mark was living in London therefore didn't qualify for a KELA delivery.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22751415

He doesn't say whether they bought it online or from KELA. But I guess this has led to people all over the world thinking they can buy a starter pack of Finnish designer baby apparel for 130e . I bet Kela has been flooded with enquiries

About 5 years ago, the missus bought a box and sent it to the sister-in-law - I don't think she was very impressed. (Snow suits aren't that useful South of Finland) The postage to the UK was around 50 Euros, so I really don't think that it was financially worth it.

also, I don't think that people have understood the system. The box is a bribe to incentivise the mother to get the proper health checks. It's the health checks that save lives.

Anyhow, I guess that the pricing is only on the Finnish pages, which have a lot more info than the English ones.

So no, it is not sold anymore. Possibly because of related to EU competition rules regarding selection of suppliers.

Still. It might be an interesting business opportunity!

Buy them off Huuto and then resell them. If you can find the box manufacturer you could also make your own..

Hi

We’re three Finnish dads who are big fans of babies receiving everything they need and, firm believers in napping in a cardboard box. As every kid should be able to sleep in a box we decided to see if we could make the original maternity package available to all expectant parents, all over the world.

So, if you want to order an original maternity package, please go to our site http://www.finnishbabybox.co and fill out the order form. If you know others who are expecting or would like to order the box, please feel free to share the message.
