Part time IT job

Post by Temse » Fri Jun 14, 2013 12:40 pm

Hello,

My name is Emese, I am living in Hungary and doing my BSc degree in Budapest. I am thinking about studying in Finland, because the universities here offer great MSc courses.
I work as a developer in a local firm next to my studies (20 hours/week). My question is that, is it possible to get a job related to my studies in Finland? I looked through some pages, but I can't find information about that.
I would appreciate if someone help me clear that.

Thanks for reading :)
Emese

Hi Emese,
As I understood people have different experience when it comes to finding a job in Finland. Some could easily get a position, and some not, and you will have our own chance. I am a part time PhD student ( therefore not hired by university) but my job is not related to my studies, neither it is related to my work experience. Anyway my fingers are crossed for you and every newcomer to Finland, to get a job here and make a small change.

Here are websites I use for searching: they usually start with www. Or https:// so. I just write the names:

Use the key word " the" or" english" as it reveals the English advertised job. I sometimes use a combination like : IT AND English or IT+ English.

-Indeed.fi. ( it is a google for job as it collects data from other websites)
-Monster.fi
-linkedin.com
-skillpages.com
-mol.fi

Don't panic if the site (like monster) is in Finnish. Use the google translate and things go smoothly.
Go ahead and best wishes to you.

Positive for you:
- Many jobs in IT don't require that you speak Finnish. I don't have any serious numbers on that, but from my own looking through job offers I'd guesstimate that one third of IT jobs in Finland don't require speaking Finnish.
- You will already have a university degree.

Negative for you:
- The Finnish IT job market still hasn't recovered from the suicide of Nokia 2 years ago. There was a huge amount of jobs cut at Nokia directly, and it also affected many smaller companies working for and around Nokia quite badly.

Depending on more details:
- Where would you study in Finland? Chances tend to be best in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
- What exactly is your Bachelor degree?
- What IT skills exactly do you have?
- What exactly are you doing in your current job?

Summary:
Only when you are good in an area where companies are hiring at the moment you will have good prospects of finding a job.

It depends really what you do. Theres always a demand for coders.
