Yes yes, it's just an older Lumia 620.... Since I don't work for Nokia or get a company phone, I am one of the few who has to actually buy a phone LOL.

Does anyone know how to turn the net off on it?

I have one of those multi sim cards.

But I am going overseas. I am afraid of being charged if the net stays online on my phone.

I am technologically challenged and can't figure out how to just make the phone into a normal phone without being connected to the net 24/7, so I don't end up with a huge bill.

Only going away for 5 days to England. It's not long, but I bet I'll be charged a whole lot if I leave the net on.

Saunalahti charges for ABSOLUTELY everything. Calling them, I can understand being charged because it's a phonecall. That's fine. But they charge you for asking a question. What a rip off.

regardless of the phone huge phone bills can't happen unless you opt into them. There is an EU rule about high charges.
Saunalahti implement this as follows

• when you are abroad and your data charges reach 62e then you receive an SMS from saunalahti.
  You must reply and opt-in to use more data traffic. Otherwise it's turned off (until you return to Finland).
  If you are in a country where SMS is not that reliable and the reply SMS gets lost, then hard luck. Your data stays turned off

Saunalahti (and Elisa) call this "EU Datavartija" although somewhat confusingly it applies any time you are outside of Finland, not just when in EU countries. They have named it this since it's an EU rule (they could have called it "Brussels Datavartija" with the same poorly thought out logic).

Do you really have mobile data turned on 24/7? Doesn't it lower the battery life?

Go to settings/mobile network and check your "data connection" and "data roaming" options. Turn off roaming and if you're really paranoid turn off the data connection completely. You can use wifi instead if you're near a usable wireless network, then at least the phone doesn't end up looking like an expensive ornament

I don't know what I have on all the time. I said I am technologically challenged. I am not one of the every other engineers Finland is known for LOL. I am an inspector and I don't inspect phones LOL.

But maybe the net is on all the time? There comes a ping when I get an email. There comes a ping when someone messages me in Facebook. And my friend said my Skype is always showing me as online, so it must be running in the background. So does that mean the net is always on? I guess so.

Yes, the battery life is awful. I have to charge the phone everyday. I wish I could buy a longer lasting battery. My friend claimed I couldn't change the battery, because she has the newest 900 something Lumia and you can't, she assumed you can't with the older one either. But you can.

Turn off always on mobile data, turn off always on wifi. Turn off bluetooth. Only use the data connections (preferably wifi) if you want to actually check your mails or similar online activity, have them off at other times. Then the battery will last much longer.
My Galaxy S3 battery was lasting 1 day, soon I found that wifi was on all the time and google plus tracking/reporting my location (via GPS) continually. Turning those off lead to 3 days battery life.

I checked. WiFi and Bluetooth were both off. Internet sharing is off.

I have not been able to find anything about 'roaming' in the settings.

If I turn the Battery Saver on, it will close my Skype, Email etc. They will only run when I open them. Maybe I should try that too. I don't need to actually have such applications open that I need to be contacted 24/7.

I heard the Lumia battery lives weren't very long anyway.

I wish I'd just bought a normal phone now. A basic text and call one. I don't really need all this fancy crap and this isn't even the newest Lumia. Though I do like playing Mahjong when I am waiting at some place or whatnot. I had a Nokia Music Phone before this. It's battery life lasted ages. And you could simply turn the music off. You didn't have to turn the whole bloody phone off to stop music if you are listening to it, like you do with the Lumia. It was a good phone. All the older Nokia phones were good and they all lasted me years before I had to replace them. I'd drop them and they'd be fine. Even dropped one into a cup of fizzy once and it was fine. Now I am terrified of dropping this Lumia LOL.

Turn off also location. That bugger GPS thing eats the battery.
I would recommend to get a free settings shortcut app from the Store, e.g. Quick Settings. You can place that toon your screen and access all these settings from there easily.
