Move to Finland with my girlfriend while studying

Post by tan_nguyen » Wed Jun 26, 2013 11:47 pm

I am going to receive my temporary residence permit for studying (Master's Programme) and go to Finland soon. I have been living with my girlfriend for more than 2 years. My girlfriend wants to go to Finland with me as a cohabiting partner (we have registered as residence in the same address for the last 2 years).

As for income requirement, my girlfriend has enough money (12000 Euro or maybe more) for proving. She also owns a house in my country (which I think can be used as a proof that she will definitely come back. As I read somewhere in the Internet that people might need to prove that they will come back to their home countries in order to be granted the residence permit to Finland)

However, my girlfriend cannot apply for the residence permit immediately, she must wait for about 6 months because she is having a contract job now. So for the next 6 months, we won't live together anymore, will it affect the decision upon the residence permit? And this is a really serious relationship, but we are not planning to get marriage soon (at least not until I finish my studies). I also want to ask the possibility for her to be granted a temporary residence permit with all those conditions. I tried to reach the Finland Embassy in my country but they are quite busy and have not responded yet :(

Are there any other ways to prove that we have been living together? I am trying to find old utilities bills but it's hopeless as it has been already 2 years. And for rental agreement, we don't have such thing because I lived in her house for the last 2 years. I just want to make sure that I have more than enough proofs to prove that we have been living for more than 2 years

I have searched through the forum and found several similar cases
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=74991 which is slightly different because he has a job
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=61374 which is quite the same except that he (or she) doesn't have any proofs
and many other cases

Income is something different from money on the bank, but yes it can help to have money.

That's true for some visas, not for Residence Permits based on family ties.

This one is actually completely different since it is about EU citizens moving to Finland.

A EU citizen has a Right of Residence in Finland, as non-EU citizen you do not have a Right of Residence in Finland.

Another thing you should keep in mind (if you haven't considered that already):

It is unlikely that you or your girlfriend will find any job in Finland.
Finland is an expensive country (the sums in the Income Requirement are realistic as a minimum of what you will have to spend), and you will be two people without an income.
And your girlfriend will have given up all job opportunities she has now in your home country for sitting idle at home in Finland.
Wouldn't it make more sense if she would e.g. start studying in Finland in a year so that her first years in Finland won't be completely lost time?

Thanks for your response, Andrian42

I am not sure if it is legal if my girlfriend comes to Finland as my cohabiting partner and we live in the same room (offered by the student union). Also, we are thinking about taking the entrance exam to an UAS but I am not sure if it is acceptable considering that my girlfriend is holding (hopefully) a temporary residence permit

P/s: With my case, I will use this form, right? http://www.migri.fi/moving_to_finland_t ... habitation

If so, I think my girlfriend can find a job as the above link does not say anything about not be able to find jobs

The link may not say she can't find a job, but the economy and lack of Finnish do...... That's the reality of the situation.

Good luck.

I have just got my residence permit card. What should I do next?
(1) I will go to Finland first, and then my girlfriend will submit the residence permit application to the embassy
(2) Just submit the residence permit application to the embassy immediately

Are there any possibilities for my girlfriend to go with me to Finland this August? (As I read the processing time for this case, it might take about 263 days in average)

Is it possible to apply for a visa to go to Finland with me and wait for the residence permit (and maybe learn some Finnish during that time)? We have collected all the required documents including the proof for 2 years cohabitation (3 years actually) and bank statement with 12000 Euro in the account (and other land properties owned by my girlfriend). I am not sure about the insurance, though, they dont mention anything about insurance for this case.

I tried the following links but I cant find what I am looking for, calling the immigration service is also super hard as they are busy all the time
