What is the delay one can return an item in the shop?

Post by Amandine.K » Wed Jul 03, 2013 11:27 am

Hi,

I bought a dress on June 20th in sale. It's been looking at me from my closet everyday and I came to the conclusion that I probably won't wear said dress ever... Impulsive buy I guess!

How long do you have to change your mind? I still have the labels and receipt.

Thanks for your help!

Amandine

You don't have any general legal right to get your money back.

If the shop offers either in general or in this specific case to take it back, then that is based on whatever rules the shop sets for it.

as written there is no legal right to return things bought in a retail store just because you change your mind. Beware also that even shops that do offer a returns policy might have different conditions for sale/clearance items, they will mention this in finnish somewhere (in the shop?). There are usually exceptions too (eg gigantti offer a 30 day return policy but not for mobile phones).
I don't know about distance selling in Finland (ie over the internet). At least in the UK all distance selling must offer a returns policy (which can give the strange effect that buying in person from a shop gives different returns policy to buying from that exact shop's internet site).

That's EU legislation, so also applies in Finland.

You bought it - its yours.

Especially in a sale...

In the "good old days" when you went to buy from a posh store like Stockmann or Pukeva and bought a gift, you might make an "open deal" if it didn't fit - but then you only got a store credit voucher. Or like buying a wedding gift like we got 5 irons you could return an unopened box to some stores.

But kn Finland you see even in-store "opened package is a decision you bought it", as we say " ain't Kansas no more Dorothy"

I used to work in Pukeva back in the day... It was about as if "Are you being served" the sales were on commission...

years ago I bought a plasma tv from stockmann and didn't like it since it made a buzzing noise. I took it back for a refund, no questions asked.
last month I bought a blu-ray recorder from them and the firmware was awful and it crashed and didn't work properly, internet discussions confirmed this unstable behaviour. This time stockmann refused a refund and said they would send it for "repair".
In the same week I bought a tv from gigantti for 839e and 4 days later they dropped the price of a better model from 1099e -> 699e. I took my 839e model back for a refund, swapping it for the 699e model. No questions asked about why I wanted to return it,they have a simple 30 days return policy, even for opened and used goods.
All the purchases were done in person at the shop.

Moral of this story - save some money and buy your electronic items from Gigantti. Stockmann have much higher prices and worse service.

For clothes it depends on the store. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Go in when they are not very busy (eg first thing in the morning), smile, be very apologetic, say your mum bought if for you but you hate it or something like that, and maybe you'll be lucky. Stockmann will always take back clothing items that haven't been worn as long as there is a price tag and a receipt. But you don't say where you bought the dress.

If the shop allows returns, it is often (usually?) printed on the sales recipt.
