Buying with installment.

Hi, I'm coming to Finland on studying purpose in August. I have to buy laptop and a mobile. So I want to use Klarna for installment. I want to know what are the necessary things for opening Klarna account and how long it will take to collect all the necessary things.

I´ve never heard of Klarna before, but I´d be very surprised if you can buy anything on credit your first year or so in Finland. You will have no credit history and most likely no income.

so it seems if you are over 18 and lives in Finland, you can get their services but personally I don't like the idea of buying electronics on installments. first and last time I bought anything on installment was a mokkula dna + internet package and I was held hostage for 24 months.... electronic products become obsolete fast and these are mostly luxury items, hence no to installments on such things...

anyway if you need laptop and mobile on credits, combination of verkkokauppa and klarna seeems almost painless. haven't tried myself though or ever will

Even with salary, you don´t have a credit history until you´ve been here a year or more. I don´t know how Klarna works though, if you can use it then it´s good.

Thanks for all your responses.I would be greatful if anyone can ensure whether I would be able to buy any product via any installment providing company,when I reach in Finland specially as I haven't reside there yet.Thanks again for the responses you have made but if anyone can clear it more,it would be a great help for me as a newcomer.

You are unknown foreigner who just landed, they wont give you credit because you could just jump in next plane with your new equipment. Would you give credit to yourself with that info?

I don't know how Klarna works but the first week I arrived in Finland I was shopping for a phone, and watched a guy like you who came here for a master's get refused an installment plan for the very reasons others have suggested.

You arrived here intending to stay at least one year, but the shopkeeper told the guy that they usually want at least two years of residence because it shows you intend to stay longer, and has given you some time to show whether you pay your bills or not. The guy kept insisting that he'd bought things on credit where he'd been before (Africa, but the guy was American) and never had any credit problems.

Arriving and then applying for installment plans on expensive electronics probably will not work. As others have said, what's stopping you from deciding you don't like the master's program and then skipping off with your stuff and not paying? It's unlikely that they will take a chance on you, and you telling them that you really mean to stay and pay it off means nothing when you have no history that they can check, and a credit history from your home country will not be worth the paper it's printed on.

I think you should budget around buying a very cheap mobile phone with cash, and plan on using the computers in the library or other places until you have saved up enough cash for a laptop. I would not count on getting those things on credit.

To add to this discussion... if Klarna does want to make a contract with you about paying in installments, I'd be sceptical of them (especially since no one here seems to have heard about them before). I'm sure there will be companies that take a chance on giving credit to a credithistoryless foreigner, but those are not necessarily the good guys. They will be the ones with huge profit margins & a crappy deal for the customer, to make up for the occasional foreigner leaving Finland without paying.

Klarna is used by many webshops in Finland.

They take the risk, but it also means they are very critical about the information.
(I once wanted to use it for our company but the delivery address was different from the registered address and they refused.)

Ok, so maybe they are not unknown crooks, that's good.

Just wanted to ask the OP to be careful of anyone that is too eager to give him magic credit without a credit history.
