travel documents lost in bus

Post by Arif Shah » Mon Jul 08, 2013 7:29 pm

Hi,
I have lost my laptop bag which had my laptop and passports and other travel documents. I left it in a bus while travelling to leppavaara.
I followed the bus but someone had pickes it up before I could reach there Now I am lost. Can someone please give some quick suggestions and what are the odds of getting my stuff back. I am more concerned about my travel documents.
I have informed the lost and found office

Arif

The police says call tomorrow so will do that. I am worried that the person who took the laptop might throw away the passport in fear that someone will ask him for the laptop too. I am afraid that he might throw it away which could be a worse situation for me. The backpack has full details about my contact and address so I hope and wish that the person is kind enough to atleast return my the travel documents of myself, my wife and my baby :(

Just a question: I think buses have cameras installed in them. Will it be possible for the police to track him or her using the camera? Does police usually get this serious to track stolen stuff using such facilities?

Sh*t you have all those important documents and your laptop together in one place and then forget it?

Wow.

I really hope there is at least one honest Fin who will do the right thing and hand it in for you.

Maybe they gave it to another police station? Is there some way to find that out?

But my suspicion is they'll keep the laptop, and toss the other stuff.

I am sorry for you. I do hope you get it back!

There is a separate file that has our passports, and some documents as well as my contact number email and home address. I can only hope that the person is kind enough to atleast post the documents to me anonymously :(

And don't forget to contact your embassy/consulate. It is possible that the passport will end up there.

There was a time when forgetting something in the bus was merely an inconvenience. Lost things always turned up in a day or two. But sadly I'm not sure that is the case any more.

The passports and other travel documents were in an envelope which also had my contact detail, phone number and email address. I have made a report in the police station and will call the embassy today as they take calls after 2pm.

However, I am not sure if someone had the intention to return it to me, otherwise they would have called/emailed as the documents had full details about me. I can only hope that I get it back. I will contact the embassy to inform them about the loss, but will try to wait for a week before applying for another one. It usually takes several weeks to get a replacement passport, so I hope that I get it back without applying for another passport.

The bag should have been given to the driver, who would have, depending on the company, forwarded it to either here
http://www.loytotavara.net/index.php?kieli=3
or here
http://www.htp-palvelut.com/?sivu=loytotavarapiste
If the OP managed to catch the bus, and the bag was nowhere to be seen, then it must have been taken by somebody else. It might have been that somebody took it wrongly but with good intentions, but in that case the OP should probably have heard from him by now.

So it seems it was stolen. Considering it was such a high value items I'd try contacting both police and bus company to see if they can help (those surveillance tapes for example). I take you're supposed and it would be wise to report the passport missing. As it is somebody has a valid passport with your name that can be used (especially by a person that looks roughly like you) to exit and enter this or other country, open bank accounts, empty existing ones, etc, etc. Especially if you used it to open bank accounts here, report to the banks in question that the document is now stolen. Some possibility of course that the person was only interested in the laptop and left the other stuff somewhere where they would go to the police later - but there are risks in waiting that happen.

Thank You everyone for the useful information that I am getting. Informing the bank was a very good point. I just contacted bank and disabled the passport identification in for our bank accounts. Police is informed, and I have also called the bus company but don't have it yet. Will contact the embassy in few hours when they start taking the calls.
