Hi -
We live in Helsinki, and will stay here till next June. Our work contract is for 12 months. Does this kind of short term employment typically qualify the employee and his/her family for health care benefits provided by the Finnish government? We are deciding whether we need to buy insurance from the U.S. where we are coming from.

First of all, I am surprised that you didn't already sort that out when you and your family applied for your Residence Permits...chiakijohnson wrote:Hi -

My reading of the information on the Kela webpage is that you are covered but your family is not, but I might be wrong on that.
http://www.kela.fi/web/en/moving-to-finland contains the relevant information.
It is best if you contact Kela - they can provide definite information.
