Dual Citizenship

Post by SuomenKenraali » Mon Jul 08, 2013 4:38 am

Interesting question that for some reason I never thought of before..

I am getting married to a fin but we are going to be living in the States for the time being. What is the process in becoming a citizen while not being a primary resident of Finland? We will eventually move here, but it will be some time in the future. I would want to have dual citizenship as soon as possible but is the process any different?

Thanks in advanced!

I don't think that's possible, unless your parents come from Finland or something.

I tihnk the rules are you need to have lived in Finland for 4-5 years and then you must also take the Finnish test and get I believe at least a 3 on the tests.

You can't just get dual citizenship by marrying a Fin. Never heard of it anyway. If it were the case, we'd all have it, us people who are/were married to Fins.

There's no easy way to get citizenship, sorry, especially if you aren't even living in the country you want the citizenship of.

Being married to a Finnish citizen makes it a lot easier for you to get a residence permit for Finland, and eventually (after living here for a certain number of years) get a permanent residence permit. If you want to become a Finnish citizen, you have to, in addition to living in Finland for some years, show that your Finnish or Swedish is good enough (you take the YKI test). THEN you can apply for citizenship.

What is the process in becoming a citizen while not being a primary resident of Finland?

Being born of a Finnish mother.

All you can/should do is start cracking the language.

And, anyway, not being resident in FInland would not exempt you from military service obligations.
But I guess you knew that.

It could, but kind a moot point, as he couldn't get citizenship without being a resident (though maybe he'd be too old or old enough by then)

I'd actually have to be a resident in order to become a citizen? I understand it wouldnt be a fast or simple process, but I figured there would be atleast some way to become a dual citizen while my primary residenst being in the States.
As far as military, I SHOULD be required to do my time if I become a citizen. However, I beleive that may not be the case. From what I understood, I actually wouldnt be allowed to be apart of the military as I was not born in the country.
Either way, I'd have no problem doing my time. Especially if/when I'm living in the country..

Why on earth did you think that?

When you have no US ancestry you cannot become a US citizen without living in the US. A Finn married to a US citizen who never lived in the US won't get US citizenship.
The same is true for Finland.

Manifest Destiny.

We Yanks all absorb it from our mother's milk.

Besides, it would be a way of giving back to all the countries that have given the US so much through immigration. Paying dividends, so to speak.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

But what can Americans give to countries which are already established? Many 1000's of years before America? LOL

What do we need from you? LOL

You gave us Macdonalds and crappy telly comedies. Those two alone are enough LOL.

I am just joking with you, don't take it seirously!

Some of those Subway rolls have more calories in them than Macdonalds burgers... Who you trying to kid it's healthy? LOL.

Anyway, Suburb is bloody expensive here. As with everything else, including Maccas.

Though I do wish KFC would come here.

Calories are not really relevant in judging what food is healthy.

A litre of orange juice has more calories than a litre of coke.
That doesn't make a coke more healthy than orange juice.

True Adrian....

Ha ha Cors..... I haven't had it in must be about 10 years! The chicken is different here. I don't think it'd be as nice if KFC was here. I need the bright white chicken of Aussie KFC LOL. Though I have been to Forum where they do fried chicken. It was ok, but not KFC LOL. Remember the gravy and potatoes.... Oh yum.... And the spicy chicken they brought out at one time. Don't know if they have it anymore. Oh, now I thought of Red Rooster LOL. Damn you.... LOL
